Ten years ago on this day, I took this photograph on a trip to Morocco — not knowing it would become the hinge my life turned on.

Lukas Keapproth, a photojournalist whose eye for light and patience with a frame taught me more in that mere month than I knew to ask for. Watching him work, I started to see photography not as a hobby but as a way of paying attention. This image became part of the portfolio that got me into SCAD, where I earned my BFA in Photography three years ago.

The second photo: Lukas, catching me moments after I caught this one.

crazy how time flies…

Hey, I’m Ella — the founder of Newport Photo Club!

I grew up across the bridge in Jamestown and I fell in love with photography at a young age, coaxing my friends into doing photoshoots and capturing the beautiful scenery of this small corner of the world. For the past six years i’ve been working alongside nautical photographer Onne van der Wal — assisting him and working in his fine art gallery in Newport. In 2024, I graduated with a BFA in photography from the Savannah College of Art & Design and moved back home to build something here.

This page grew out of a simple desire, to connect with other photographers in the area and create a network for visual artists in Newport. A place to share work, find community, and make it easier for local talent to be seen.

I am also a working photographer available for hire — portraits, headshots, couples and engagement sessions, and event coverage, commercial work etc. prints available as well.

If you’re a photographer, a creative, or someone looking for one — you’re in the right place. Welcome to the #newportphotoclub
