Why do you do it?

I find myself lingering on this question longer than I’d like to admit. I like definitive answers; I don’t leave much space for uncertainty. For a while now, I’ve felt lost in what I’m pursuing. How am I going to get there? Why do I feel so drawn to something so much bigger than me? The question is so daunting that I’ve hidden behind passive “I don’t knows” and shoulder shrugs for almost a full year.

I took a look through my book, focusing on my work from the beginning of last year until now. Maybe it was the wind, but I felt a whisper of an answer.

It was amazing to see the progress in technique, truly, but nothing compared to remembering each emotion that came with each of these projects. The anxiety of meeting someone new. The excitement of downloading the images as soon as I get home. The adrenaline of closing my first big project on my own. The satisfaction of finalizing a collection that means as much to others as it does to me.

The answers I’m looking for are intertwined in each of these moments. They’re distinct and quaint, easy to step over when you’re looking to the sky.
