One thing money can’t buy you is style. Man City might have spent the world on players, managers, sponsors and now lawyers but, for us, the most dominant club we’ve arguably ever seen on these shores (asterisk) never got it right off the pitch. In truth, they looked like a dog’s dinner half the time. The other half of it they looked like the designer had wandered into a Laser Quest on acid with a colouring book.

So, to recap: money can’t buy you taste. But it can buy you a lot of a lawyers. Not one of them could make a case for these shirts being signed off, mind.

Nike won the right to make Germany’s next shirt but adidas are making sure we remember who made the others.

Germany in white, with three stripes on the shoulders, has been a familiar sight for more than seven decades, after all.

There is still one adidas shirt to come, and it may or may not deserve a place beside everyone’s favourites.

But one thing is for sure: if this is what defeat looks like, then it’s a glorious way to go. by @showboat.kits
