🚨 Graphic Content Warning

This is the kind of incident the Sikh community has been worried about.

Only days after @dhsgov circulated a racist poster portraying “Mr. Singh” as a bad driver and telling people to “self-deport or find out,” a Sikh truck driver was violently stabbed at a truck stop and is now fighting for his life.

Rhetoric matters. The words and messages put forward by those in positions of power can have consequences far beyond social media or political campaigns. For years, immigrants, truck drivers, people of color, and other vulnerable communities have been subjected to increasingly hostile rhetoric. Seeing that rhetoric continue to escalate is deeply concerning.

After 9/11, a Sikh American, Sardar Balbir Singh Sodhi, was among the first victims of a hate-motivated killing in the United States. Twenty-five years later, after generations of Sikhs have built lives, businesses, families, and communities across this country, it is heartbreaking to see our community once again being portrayed as something to fear or blame.

We cannot become numb to this. We cannot accept hatred, discrimination, or violence as normal.

Our thoughts and prayers are with our Sikh brother as he fights for his life. We hope he makes a full recovery, and we hope the circumstances surrounding this attack are properly investigated and that justice is served. 🙏🏽 by @showtime.singh
