From the phones in our pockets to the e-bikes 🚲 and scooters 🛴 in your garage, lithium-ion batteries🔋 power more of our daily lives than we may realize. But when these batteries or their chargers are used improperly, the consequences can be serious.

This Fire Prevention Week, Shriners Children’s Boston Burn Program Coordinator Rich Grady, BSN, RN, is helping families understand the risks and the simple steps they can take to prevent burn injuries. Safe charging starts with awareness.

“When the bike is fully charged, immediately remove it from the charger. There’s a thing called thermal runaway when a battery gets to full charge and overheats if it’s kept on the charger," said Rich. "Don’t charge e-bikes or scooters overnight and always be home when charging them in case a fire happens. If you hear a pop or something starts to smell weird while riding, get off the bike immediately and call the fire department.”
