Promoting community partnerships in an academic setting to enhance student learning and meet community needs.
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
The CCE enjoyed attending and presenting at the Engagement Scholarship Consortium in Knoxville, TN, last week!

Dr. Lee Miller, CCE Director, and Taylor Morrison, community engagement coordinator, presented on the benefits of Community Engaged Research (CEnR) and how the CCE designed a workshop series with curriculum to support faculty at SHSU and the communities they work with.

Meanwhile, Taylor and Dr. Susan Harte (@shsucollegeofed professor and our Workforce Ready Kats Mentor) presented on how professional development and faculty mentoring support student success for the community work study students in the Workforce Ready Kats program.

It’s been a whirlwind two weeks for CCE professional development. Next week, we will highlight Taylor’s key takeaways from her time at @iarslce’s annual conference. You won’t want to miss that post! by @shsu_cce

We enjoyed hearing from @hisdhornets’ Superintendent, Mr. Travis Fanning yesterday at the Promoting Our Positives (POP) @walker_county_chamber committee meeting.

The teachers, staff, and administrators at HISD are doing so much to care for and educate youth in the Huntsville community. We are proud to partner together on a number of initiatives to promote student success in HISD and at @samhoustonstate. taken in Walker County Chamber of Commerce by @shsu_cce

Thanks to our friends at @shsucareers for hosting three days of great internship/career fairs for our students and many community partner organizations!

While there, we visited with some nonprofits and other entities that we look forward to working with in the near future.

We have the best community advisory board!

Every semester we get together to share about the collaborative initiatives taking place between campus and the community. But not only do we share out about our work, we also hear directly from our advisory board members! Our members contribute feedback and ideas, and often help to shape what we do next at the CCE.

This meeting, we were pleased to welcome Dr. Zach Doleshal, Dr. Xuewei Chen, and Dr. Shaminul Shakib to share about the work they are doing in partnership with local communities, including community engaged research activities.

We look forward to sharing more about what’s coming next thanks to our advisory board’s contributions! taken in Katy And E. Don Walker Sr. Education Center by @shsu_cce

We enjoyed attending this morning’s @tedxshsu sessions spanning topics including resiliency, stepping out of our algorithm, the importance of connection, redefining control, and crossing invisible boarders to broaden our impact.

One of our Community Engaged Researchers, Dr. Jeffrey Gardner shared a particularly impactful story about how he shifted his research style to make space for shared decision-making, peer review from community stakeholders, and shared findings and information with his community partners.

By crossing the symbolic boarder between researcher and participant, and exploring what beneficial resources could be built together, the barriers faded. Dr. Gardner encourages researchers to consider this type of community-engaged approach. This, he says, is work that creates transformation.

Thanks to all who contributed to putting on this incredible event! taken in Sam Houston State University by @shsu_cce

@samhoustonstate faculty have the opportunity to learn about what it takes to “ACE” their courses every semester.

Last week’s fall workshop was full of great conversations, Academic Community Engagement (ACE) course ideas, and possible partnership models for each course.

Our favorite part of every workshop is learning about what our faculty across campus are teaching and how they envision their students working in collaboration with a community partner.

At SHSU, our campus is doing more together—for (and with) the state of Texas and beyond. taken in Sam Houston State University by @shsu_cce

Our Workforce Ready Kat (WRK) student, Chris has been hard at work with @imerjart at the Be Free Gallery here in Huntsville.

Chris began as a volunteer at the gallery, and now he is able to earn his financial aid award while continuing to assist one of his favorite non-profits thanks to the WRK program!

Our community partner, @artbrutslay, speaks highly of Chris and the work that he does at the gallery!

Came to Sam Houston with a dream and left with a career in motion 💪

For Bearkat alumna Madison Smith (’19), a middle school career assessment sparked an interest in broadcast journalism that would eventually take her from the #SHSU student newscast to the anchor desk.

While at Sam, Smith immersed herself in opportunities that helped prepare her for the industry. Today, she’s a morning anchor for KOLD 13 News, and she’s still working toward her ultimate goal: bringing her career back home to Houston.

Read more about Smith’s journey at the link in our bio!
