The best is yet to come for you, sweet Sherlock. Sherlock is our very special puppy looking for his special people. When he arrived on transport last Thursday, we could see he was having a harder time than his littermates. While the others were quickly finding their footing, Sherlock was fleeing from people and avoiding anyone who got too close. We’ve been giving him the time and space he needs to take it all in, and little by little, he’s showing us what a brave boy he truly is.

We don’t have reason to believe Sherlock experienced abuse, but being a young puppy in a tough county shelter in Tennessee, followed by a long transport and another unfamiliar place, can be a lot to handle. At just 3.5 months old, he has so much life ahead of him. We want to find him a home that will help him feel safe enough to enjoy it.

Here’s what we believe Sherlock needs to thrive:

✨A predictable home outside of the city with patient, dog-savvy owners.

✨NO YOUNG CHILDREN at this time. Their energy and unpredictability are too scary for him right now.

✨A confident older canine companion to learn from. He has already benefited so much from the guidance of his more confident siblings.

Sherlock has shown us that with the right support, he can go far. But he needs time. New experiences need to be gradual and positive, with someone who understands fearful dogs and knows when to pause. Pushing him before he’s ready can leave him overwhelmed and set back the trust he’s working so hard to build.

We’ve seen a scared little boy who is still learning that he’s safe. Time, gentle encouragement, and celebrating the little wins are key. A soft tail wag, a sweet little kiss, a moment of play…things that might seem small are actually huge for him.

Sherlock truly is the sweetest little man, you just can’t help but root for him. We know he has so much happiness to share with his future family…he just needs someone willing to meet him where he is and help him get there. If you can be that person for Sherlock, apply to adopt him at sghrescue.org. (📍Dedham, MA)

We’ve had a great few days of adoptions, and a big thank you goes to @claysubaru for hosting our adoption event, where 10 dogs found homes!

Five of the dogs who attended are still waiting for homes of their own. After the rush of interest in our black, fluffy puppies, who quickly found families, things have gotten a little quiet. These beautiful souls deserve some attention, too.

We also have several dogs who didn’t attend the event and would love the chance to meet you. If you’re ready to hop on the adoption bandwagon, head to sghrescue.org and apply today!

***JUST ADOPTED!!!*** Meet Theo! We believe Theo spent his first 4+ years in a good home, but with young children and another baby on the way, his herding instincts became more than his family could manage. Theo was doing what comes naturally to a herding dog…herding their children. Sadly, he’s now looking for a fresh start.

Kennel life has been tough on Theo, but he’s doing his best to take it all in stride. He loves attention, a good walk in the woods, and is always is ready to lock in when the treats come out. Theo truly wants to learn and loves guidance and direction. We don’t like making breed assumptions, but we believe Theo could possibly be a full bred Australian Shepherd. He’s a working dog through and through and will need a job to keep that busy brain content.

Estimated to be 4–5 years old and weighing about 40 lbs, Theo has shown us more every day just how smart this gentleman is. He already knows a ton of commands, and it’s been fun discovering his full repertoire. Sit, down, twirl, roll over…add in being crate and potty trained, and Theo’s got a pretty excellent résumé.

Theo has done well with kids, but any placement with children will be considered carefully given his history. He hasn’t paid much mind to our shelter cats and has been friendly greeting other dogs and joining other shelter pups for pack walks.

Theo is silly, goofy, a touch neurotic in that classic Aussie way, and clearly looking to connect with his person. His ideal home will have breed experience and understand that he’ll need patience as he settles in, learns a new routine, and builds trust that this time, it’s permanent.

If those gorgeous icy blues have won you over and you’re ready to embrace who Theo is through and through, submit an application to meet him at sghrescue.org (📍Dedham, MA)

Meet Lainey! Lainey came to us as an unclaimed stray, so most of her past will remain a mystery. What we do know is that she’s been a mama before (likely more than once) and we think it’s about time this girl gets to be the one who is loved and taken care of.

Pegged to be somewhere around 2–3 years old, Lainey is just a 75 lbs galumphing love bug. She’s big on recieving her quota of affection, tasty treats and a tennis ball. Supply her with those basics and you’re already well on your way to becoming her favorite person. She’s sweet, goofy, easygoing and is the kind of girl who just seems genuinely happy to be included.

Lainey enjoys playing with other dogs and even passed her cat test with flying colors! We think she could also do well with respectful, dog-savvy kiddos. Modern technology, however, is not her thing. She doesn’t understand why finding a family requires having a phone in her face, and honestly, we get it.

She’ll need gradual exposure to “real life” so she can build confidence without getting overwhelmed. Take things at her pace, give her time to settle in, and read up on the 3-3-3 rule!
She’s crate trained, seems to be mostly potty trained and making strides with her leash skills, however basic training and adjusting to home life will still be part of the journey with her new family.

After going from stray to Animal Control to rescue and then making the long trip to Massachusetts, Lainey deserves a little time to exhale. She may need some patience while she figures out her new routine and realizes that this time, she actually gets to stay.

We may never know everything about Lainey’s first few years. But we know the girl in front of us now and she is gentle, wonderfully doofy, full of love and more than ready for her turn.

All she needs now is a family, a place to land and perhaps an unreasonable supply of tennis balls. Apply to adopt Lainey at sghrescue.org (📍Dedham, MA)

***ADOPTED!!!*** Maisie already has tremendous interest, and we know she’ll have no trouble finding a loving home. But her story is not one we can simply ignore.

Someone purchased this puppy from a breeder. Then tied her to a tree and left her behind. At approximately four months old, Maisie deserved so much better.

We always encourage adoption, however we know there will always be people who will choose to buy from a breeder. But wherever your dog comes from, you are responsible for their care. Even when it’s more than what you expected.

The doodle craze comes with a lot of promises. Non-shedding. Hypoallergenic. The perfect family dog. And online puppy listings can hide irresponsible breeders behind cute photos and third-party sellers.

What those photos don’t show is the work. Training. Grooming. Exercise. Patience. A cute puppy is still a puppy, with needs that don’t disappear once the novelty wears off.

We don’t know why Maisie’s person abandoned her, but we do know there is no excuse for tying a puppy to a tree and walking away.

Fortunately, a kind person found Maisie and took her in. Someone else stepped up where her person failed her, but other dogs aren’t so fortunate. Some enter overcrowded shelters and never make it out. They deserve homes just as much as she does.

Can we tell you what kind of “doodle” Maisie is? No. Can we promise she won’t shed or trigger allergies? No.

We can tell you she is a truly lovely puppy. Despite what she’s been through, she is ready to love and be loved. She’s going to make someone a very special companion.

Before you purchase a puppy online, check your local shelters and rescues. Your future dog may already be waiting.

We’re confident Maisie will find her family soon. We’re sharing her story for all the dogs still waiting for the same chance.

***ADOPTED!!!*** From frightened to fearless, Scottie truly is a wonder dog. In just two weeks with us, she has slowly lowered her guard and shown us the silly, spunky spirit that was waiting to shine through.

Some people may see “fearful dog” or “flight risk” and shy away. But even the most confident dogs can get scared. What matters most is how they recover, and Scottie is quick to lean on the people she trusts for reassurance.

Scottie may still find city life and young children too overwhelming, but she continues to prove what a brave girl she truly is. We attribute much of her growing confidence to time, patience, and having a canine companion by her side. She has completely flourished with her friend Cooper, and we think she would love a playful canine sibling who can keep up with her antics.

At 1–2 years old and 35 pounds, Scottie is fully grown, but don’t let her lean stature fool you. She is packed with pouncy power. This girl could go for miles and would love an active, adventurous family who can offer her the outlets she needs to explore, play, and continue building confidence.

Scottie is also comfortable around our shelter cats, generally choosing to ignore or avoid them. For now, we feel her best match is a home with teens and older. That isn’t to say she couldn’t do well with children; we simply feel she deserves a safe, steady place to continue growing without being overwhelmed by too much newness at once.

Beyond her exercise needs, Scottie would love to continue her training. She’s smart and motivated, but still has plenty to learn. She is house-trained and would likely do well with a crate, though a spot on the couch beside you would be welcome, too. Once she’s comfortable, she’s always happy to pause for some love and a good snuggle session.

We’re not sure why Scottie has been so overlooked, but one thing’s for sure: the most overlooked dogs are often the most special, and that couldn’t be more true of Scottie.

If you see what we see in her, submit an application to meet Scottie at sghrescue.org (📍Dedham, MA)

While our last two dogs continue waiting for homes, they have each other. Scottie and Cooper’s friendship happened quickly, and we’re so grateful these two found one another.

Cooper was struggling at the shelter, but having a buddy to play with has brought out the joyful puppy we knew was hiding in there. Scottie has also grown more confident in the world with a friend by her side. We truly believe both of these pups would thrive with a canine companion and partner in crime.

Surprisingly, Cooper (10 months old and 57 lbs) and Scottie (1-2 years old and 35 lbs) are looking for very similar homes.

Ideal owner: Both are building confidence and learning to embrace new things, so a dog-savvy owner who is comfortable reading body language will be important. They need people who will allow them to experience the world at their own pace.

Location: Both would ideally enjoy a home outside the city, and a fenced-in yard would be a huge bonus.

Dogs: Absolutely! A canine companion would help them burn off energy while also giving them a confident guide to learn from.

Cats: Both can live with cats, though Cooper would do best with a dog-savvy cat since he thinks they’re very fun to play with. Scottie is calm, cool, and collected around kitties.

Kids: Cooper has lived with a 10-year-old and may do well with calm, gentle children. Scottie would do best in a home with teenagers or older.

Energy level: Cooper can certainly keep up with Scottie, but we’d describe him as moderately active. Scottie is always ready to go. She’s on the upper end of energetic without being hyper and settles nicely in the home.

Both have beautiful personalities and huge hearts full of love. They’re ready to let their people in…if you think that’s with you, apply to adopt Scottie or Cooper (or both!) at sghrescue.org (📍Dedham, MA)
