“Identity is not a steel ball chained to my ankle, it is in my heart and goes with me with me everywhere” - Zaha Hadid

The 89 Degrees of Zaha Hadid symposium, held across the @aaschool, the @zahahadidfoundation , and @serpentineuk , functioned as a two-day examination of the architect’s life, work, and the evolution of her design research. Marking the 10th anniversary of her passing, the programme explored her methodology, mythology, her early influences in Baghdad and Beirut, and the cultural footprint of her professional output.

The series of panels, which also includes the public reopening of 10 Bowling Green Lane and the Architecture of Performance exhibition, serves as a record of Zaha’s enduring legacy and I delighted in some of the more personal memories shared by panelists.

The symposium ‘89 Degrees of Zaha Hadid’ was curated by Aric Chen, @jihanedyer @francescofiammenghi (@zahahadidfoundation) @shumonbasar and @hansulrichobrist (Serpentine) by @shumonbasar

THANK YOU, TUNISIA 🇹🇳♥️

NULL OBJECT premiered at the Biennale de l’Image en Mouvement 2026 in Tunis. I made this work in a state of existential crisis, thinking unthinkable thoughts, following certain ideas to their most disturbing conclusions, and spending far too much time inside the logic of systems I wish didn’t exist. I had recurrent nightmares about being a metahuman living inside an unreal engine project who was being tortured by a human from base reality who didn’t realize I was conscious. The deeper I went, the harder it became to distinguish speculation from the world we already inhabit. I became more paranoid than normal. Every question opened onto another, and every answer seemed to make things worse.

After months of spending 15 hours a day at my computer(aftrer a SSD containing 6 months of work mysteriously disappeared)working in Unreal Engine in my studio apartment, living off protein bars (just the word [protein] makes me sick) I was n Tunisia, seeing NULL OBJECT exist in a world beyond the one in sleep deprived dream /nightmare state from where I had made it. It was surreal to surrounded by artists whose work, intelligence, and imagination I admire so much. I am truly honored to share this moment of space and time with such a these beautiful + courageous humans.

It was my fate to be sick for much of my time there, which made it difficult to experience everything I had hoped to, but i still got see so much from my low fevered dream state and im grateful for every moment.

I was deeply moved by the enormous collective effort of curators, organizers, producers, technicians, volunteers, the people installing the exhibitions, cleaning and caring for the spaces, welcoming everyone. So many people working tirelessly, with so much care and dedication to bring this into being. 🫂🙏

My deepest gratitude to @centredartcontemporaingeneve, @jaoutunis, @kamel_lazaar_foundation, Andrea Bellini, Lina Lazaar, and especially @shumonbasar for nominating me to be part of BIM’26. And to @madameghorbelle , Malek, Pablo ,Omar, Kinda, Nour, and everyone who worked so hard to bring this special biennial into being

JAOU TUNIS 2026

An immense thanks to @jaoutunis @kamel_lazaar_foundation for inviting us to their 8th edition.

I was one of the selectors for the Biennial of Moving Images, "Becoming the Ocean," curated by Lina Lazaar and Andrea Bellini (@centredartcontemporaingeneve). My nominees S. A. Chavarria and @zeinxmajali presented new works — "Null Object" and "Shroud House/Big Palace" respectively — among 14 others including Alaa Mansour, Hajra Waheed and Natasha Tontey. Zein also performed "would you still love me if I was a swarm" which we originally commissioned @ibraazlondon last year.

We visited @tilalutique. We saw concerts by Yasmin Hamdan and Shabaka Hutchings (thank you @imed_alibi). I met Francesca Albanese and Mohammed el Kurd, and got a download by Eyal Weizman on the speculative counterfactual of October 8th onwards. I hosted a session with some of my favourite thinker makers.

Lina, the @b7l9_tunis team, and especially, for me, the immense generosity of Malek and @madameghorbelle creates something ambitious but also precise.

Tunis' forever kween of everything @madameghorbelle by @shumonbasar

Ibraaz, under the directorship of Lina Lazaar, is an initiative of the Kamal Lazaar Foundation. The design of Ibraaz’s HQ in London was conceptualised by Sumayya Vally and Counterspace.
Collaborating with @ibraazlondon as a client and working alongside Shumon Basar (@shumonbasar) has been an absolute dream for @sumi_v and the Counterspace team. “It has been quite moving to witness this community take shape and be a part of its family over the past year,” says Sumayya.
Designed as a living 'gathering of gatherings' – anchoring the collective spatial typologies of the global majority and reimagined for London today – and observing how visitors have inhabited these spaces, from the street-level warmth of @oula.london @boutheina.b.salem , to @burleyfisher and @palfest at Maktaba, through to Iqra, the central Majlis, and in dialogue with voices like @shumonbasar , has been extraordinary.
This one-year milestone reflects the continuous layering of community, ritual, and memory that keeps this architecture evolving every single day. by @shumonbasar

$BIRTH OF DATE CANNOT BE A FUTURE DATE It’s my birthday, and I’ll carousel if I want to. The first picture is when I “modelled” aged 17 for the local boutique I worked Saturdays at, and I think it’s my favourite picture of me, some idealised brown Kurt Cobain Homme Plus. Then there’s Pabna, where I was born, Blackpool, Dubai, Pontefract, Ilford, Neuköln, Cambridge, and beloved Poulton, our family home since 1987. Abba loved my birthdays, even if I hide from them. Amma and @dahlsb keep our traditions alive, cash in hand, tears in my eyes. Just another day. Ilyasm. by @shumonbasar$

In the new issue of @lovemagazine, I’ve written about the end of the rules based order and the end of luxury, bad taste as bad ethics, and more. Many of this year's thoughts brought into one spiralling escalation trap. Thank you to @mrttklll @ferdinandoverderi @caiahagel for your expert insights.

Merci to @selmanouri @kaci0n for an invitation to write something as expansive as this; and @matildesofiamonti for back and forth on the images: they’re perfect.

We are preparing for the arrival of winter. We have already done some work to protect ourselves from the biting cold that is fast approaching, though there is still hard work ahead. We feel more at ease now that we have finished the most difficult tasks—covering the tent and expanding the living area—but we still need your support. I hope you will continue to stand by us so we can get through this winter in comfort, without the fear of flooding or the terror caused by strong winds. I am counting on you to help us overcome this nightmare we are living through. We used to live in safe homes; now, every winter, we have to dismantle all the tents and prepare anew for the coming season because the plastic sheeting tears in the summer heat. I hope you hear my plea and continue to make our voices heard, as winter is drawing very near.
