Looking for those of South Asian descent (from India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Maldives, or Sri Lanka) willing to share their experience with an eating disorder and/or disordered eating.

To access the form, please see the bio or navigate to this link:
https://forms.gle/EB3bMso9GwemKLvNA.

It is split into two sections, with the first being to collect demographic information and the second regarding descriptions of what one’s experience was like. The demographic information is collected because, eventually, we would like to aggregate all the experiences into an interactive map that shows how eating disorders are presented across the world and make the point that they aren’t an illness only present in those recognized by the media. Eating disorders do not discriminate and the purpose of collecting these first-hand accounts is to highlight that while also bringing to attention the unique barriers South Asians face in receiving proper treatment. Anyone of the South Asian community is encouraged to share, including those not often acknowledged in the discussion about eating disorders like men, LGBTQ+ individuals, and older adults.

Please be aware that filling out the form may be triggering and will require thinking about your struggles with the disorder. If you are not comfortable with this, do not fill out the form.

ALL SUBMISSIONS WILL BE KEPT ANONYMOUS. Should there be any concern about confidentiality and how personal information will be used, feel free to reach out.

Back with a post emphasizing the risk of constantly consuming media centered around what has been deemed as “healthy” and “proper.”

Health looks different for everyone. Someone’s “What I Eat in A Day” does not need to look the exact same as yours, nor do you need to adjust yours to match what works for them. While it may act as a good reference or example for people trying to make changes in their diet or lifestyle, it is important to START SMALL. Take health at your own pace and find what makes you feel stable and energetic.

A quick overview of what some signs to look for in case someone may be experiencing an eating disorder. Especially around this time with the holidays approaching, food is a very important part of celebration, and this can be triggering as people navigate their relationship with eating.

Remember the power of support. There is more to offering your presence and love than you may think, given how we have come to not trust one another from the stigma that exists around mental health.

Thank you so much to @anamariabetancourto for this incredible article on eating disorders in Latinx and AAPI populations. Really appreciate the wide variety of perspectives that contributed to the making of this article, and how detailed the writing was.

Any form of exposure is progress. Read the full article on The Conversationalist’s site (@convo_ist) at this link:

A pretty significant difference between South Asian cultures and Western ones worth looking at is how we have more of a collectivist view as opposed to focusing on the individual.

While this can be a barricade to starting conversation around mental health, that doesn’t mean it’s impossible, or that we need to reject our culture in order to seek treatment. There is a balance we can come to. It just may take some time to understand what works.

To bring attention a few of the characteristics in South Asian culture that may particularly affect people with an eating disorder in a nuanced way.

Many are likely familiar with the unreasonable standards set by others and, naturally, ourselves as a result too.

But it doesn’t need to remain this way. We have a platform here to speak out on and to build a judgement-free space to express what is going on to one another.

Use that. There is huge difference that can be made with just your voice.

Informed by her lived experience and a deep commitment to anti-oppressive care, she supports clients in untangling shame and building a more connected relationship with themselves—including food and body image. Her work is rooted in inclusive care, sustainable healing, and the complexity of being human.

In this session, we’ll look at trauma’s impact on our relationship to food, the limitations of mainstream eating disorder treatment, and the role of intergenerational trauma and systemic harm.

Back after a bit of a hiatus in posting! The media’s influence on our perception of pretty much everything isn’t that new of a topic, yet its real impact still doesn’t seem to have been recognized. What works for one person won’t necessarily work for you, nor should you force it to, because leading a healthy and fulfilled life depends on individual needs.
