Photos from ‘Imperfect Metaphors for Death’! @aisforartichoke and I’s fever dream of a puppet show. This was our performance with a few difficulties so we didn’t get shots of everything we wanted, but I threw in a few process photos as well to get a sense of it. :) All photos aside from #4, 5, and the last are taken by Mark Syvertson. by @shunterk

Some in process photos of @aisforartichoke and I’s insane puppet show, “Imperfect Metaphors for Death”, performed as part of this year’s Puppet Slam Jamboree with @lilypadpuppettheatre! First meet Luca, our seven-year old protagonist, and the five foot version of the back of his head which popped open to reveal a toy theater, wherein played nature documentaries ruminating on the nature of life and death. Andy built the gorgeous toy theater and I got to make all sorts of wonderful creatures to inhabit it, he built Luca’s body while I made and painted the face and head, he sculpted the large head and I painted it— it was a fantastic back and forth to build and write and I’m super happy with how (most of😅) the performances turned out! There are photographs of the show somewhere, as well as some other shots by our resident documentarian Alex, so hopefully more to come. :) by @shunterk

And it’s the finale! This was the last act of a show I pulled together called “Do You Feel the Love? A St Valentine’s Circus”, and there was so much love working with these wonderful performers and making this show! It was wildly successful, bringing in two sold-out shows of 75 people in that tiny space and raising well over a grand for scholarships to @circusculture. The show wouldn’t have been possible without the work and play of a beautiful ensemble- @babin_bambi @gail.thepail @ereuve @hol.adams @heather.scheck @jonbilling @snacks4claire @m_i_l_e_y_dot_com and @lee.cotman ! ❤️ Directed and choreographed by me. :) by @shunterk

I did an aerial act for the first time in years this February! I MC’ed the evening as a resurrected St Valentine, who at the end of the show got to shed his priestly garments and visit a place he’s always wanted to go: San Francisco. Also I got to finally live out my beheaded Roman saint/@sashavelour mashup fantasy that I never knew I wanted. taken in Circus Culture by @shunterk

I’m not sure how long it’ll take me to get over Angels in America, but it hasn’t happened yet. My brain is still swimming in the emotional world, one that I was able to unlock for the first time while performing ever, and I hear lines from the show commenting on every quotidian thing (what the f you think this is? *Sunday school*?).

I love the community we built and, at least according the audience members I spoke with, the calibre of the show was something special. I am so incredibly proud of my performance and this show in total, I don’t know if I’ll get to do another like it— I hope I do. I enjoyed it for all it was worth and it’s only made me hungrier for more.

I still have more decompressing from Angels to do, but the next project is already on its way! @aisforartichoke and I are building a puppet show (finally!) for this May’s coming Puppet Slam Jamboree with @lilypadpuppettheatre. Last year I got to lead @circusculture ‘s Clover Troupe in building the wonderful ‘A Ship Show’ at the Cherry (@thecherryarts). Here’s one of my favorite numbers I choreographed: the Ocean Floor Dance Party. @rootsandwings_laura kills it in the Sea Queen fabric solo and I’m in love with this entire ensemble.
