A more light-hearted post than my last one from Moss Landing. This is the black-footed albatross, a pelagic seabird that was gliding beautifully right above the ocean on the calm day when the waters seemed more like a lake. WARNING 🛑 Killer whales hunt, capture and feed!

Killer whale encounter this past weekend on Sanctuary Cruises RHIB. The CA39A’s Hopper’s pod were swimming in swift speed, circling beneath the surface and then came up eating prey. One came belly up for a brief moment also!

Now, I’m not sure how common this is or not while hunting and/or feeding, but one killer whale left some poop to fertilize our ecosystem.
This is visible in the photo where the is plowing through with a portion of meal in its mouth.

Glorious gull coming in for a meal! What’s interesting is we were watching orcas and seemed the orcas were chasing something but never really saw what they captured, if anything, and at the same time is when these birds dove quickly. I wasn’t exactly sure what was going on or what they had but kept snapping during that moment. #seagulls #gulls #nature #wildlife @sanctuarycruises @canonusa by @shutterbugrosa

Humpback whales I saw last week came up so close that I was able to get some very close-up shots of the barnacles on the whale’s pectoral fin and whale lice between the barnacles if you zoom in on the first photo. A single humpback can carry up to 1,000 pounds of barnacles. Acorn barnacles and hitchhiking gooseneck barnacles anchor securely into the whale’s skin to filter-feed as the animal swims.
