Two years ago this week you left us. I woke up at 5am to check on you. I knew where we were going that day. You threw your arms up and said "I'm still here!" and we laughed.

The months leading up to that final day were spent in service to each other. Tedious, small acts of love. Watching murder she wrote, cooking your meals, washing your hair, changing the sheets, fighting the nurse who kept trying to get you to go the hospital.

We sat beside you all day. I counted between each breath and as they slowed I said "she's going", and you did.

We were always in sync, like how you always knew when to call when something was wrong, even if I didn't admit it.

The last words you said to me "you smell like smoke".

Indeed, in the months of isolation and cancer I had picked up smoking again.

I sat with this for a while with a sense of shame, but even in your last moment you were mothering me.

I miss you everyday, I hate that those memories seem more distant, but your love and strength is still leading me through life. Happy Mother's Day. taken in Hopewell Cape, New Brunswick by @shyguybeach
