“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.” — Jeremiah 29:11

It may not mean nothing to yall, but it means everything to me. I thought as a black man coming from where I come from, that this would be impossible. When I first came to UMES, I was leaving behind an athletic career and track scholarship without knowing that I was more than just an athlete. I was lost, I was confused with the pressure to become a black man of excellence. I struggled but and my journey up until this point has been filled with personal development, leadership, and so many more things that I did not know were waiting for me. One degree, a few organizations, and awards later I am here to say it was not always easy, but it will always be worth it.

To the earlier version of myself, you did it king. You stayed true to the vision and took it further then you even thought was possible! Keep ya chin up and chest out, and continue to chase greatness.

To my village, thank you all for believing in me, supporting me, and loving me along the way. Thank you for the words of wisdom and encouragement. Being a troubled child, I did not know where I was headed, but yall always believed. I am now and always will be forever grateful because I couldn’t be here without you.

As I plan to take over the world, I know that this isn’t the end but the beginning. I have completed the first step of a much bigger journey and only God knows what’s next.

With that being said, on December 13th at 10am I Shymir L. Coakley, will be walking across the stage and officially becoming an Alumnus of Thee University of Maryland, Eastern Shore with a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Finance.

The Marathon Continues..
