Poppy’s diary entries were intimately personal. Not simply because we were reading her own words, but because they captured what continuous bullying looks like. The gradual damage. The way someone’s deteriorating mental health reaches into their extracurricular activities, their ambitions, and the things that once brought them joy. The long-term consequences of being relentlessly targeted by people who can go about their day while you are struggling to survive yours. Her entries left me shattered. And I’m glad they did. I wanted to feel the weight of what happened to her. There is something deeply disturbing about how easily people dismiss someone else’s trauma when acknowledging it would require them to examine their own behavior. These women had every opportunity to confront what they had done. Instead, they justified, dismissed, and downplayed. The cruelty they were comfortable inflicting became something they wanted treated as insignificant once they were expected to answer for it. Their adult struggles did not earn my sympathy, they deserve misery after making Poppy’s life so unbearable. As the story unfolded and more was revealed, I was satisfied watching these women who fucked around finally find out. I believe in karma. I believe in revenge. And I am not one of those people who believes the person who was harmed should always be expected to β€œbe the bigger person.” Too often, that expectation looks like silence. Isolation. Swallowing what happened so everyone else can remain comfortable. We need to be honest about the devastating realities of asking someone to carry all of that alone. But my satisfaction with their consequences never outweighed my grief for Poppy. I grieved her from beginning to end. Every entry made me feel the loss of what she deserved: safety, friendship, room to pursue her talent, and the freedom to exist without becoming someone else’s target. She Started It gave me the revenge I wanted while making me feel every reason I wanted it. πŸ¦β€β¬› HAPPY PUB DAY TO THE FIVE OF US! 🩷 This book is an emotional one for me. It was inspired by own time as a teacher during lockdown, and by the generation I taught that missed out on so much. The girls in this book are working class girls with big dreams and that can so easily have described me as a teenager. This book very nearly wasn't published and it's the incredible team at Blackstone and my amazing agent Helen Heller I have to thank for bringing this novel into the world. It's a little different to SHE STARTED IT and I DID WARN HER - more quiet, more of a slow burn, more focused on character, perhaps more tragic. But it is still a twisty thriller, still filled with fatal secrets and women doing terrible things, and if you do give this book a chance I hope you love it as much as I do. There have been lovely cards and flowers and cakes and I am very grateful ❀️❀️❀️ Thank you, to all the readers out there.
