School headmaster sued by parents after they say he taped their kids' mouths shut

John Raymond is accused of taping the mouths shut of multiple children in 2022 and physically abusing a minor at an earlier date.

SLIDELL, La. — Four parents are suing former Lakeside Christian Academy headmaster John Raymond for the alleged minor abuse of four children, three of which occurred in 2022 and one of which occurred between 2016 and 2017, according to court documents.

Court documents said that Raymond, who was also a pastor and the school's founder, allegedly removed three minor children from classrooms on March 17, 2022 and taped their mouths shut, and committed what was referred to as "other unwanted touching" which will reportedly be shown at trial.

The lawsuit also mentions a separate incident between November 16, 2016 and March 31, 2017 where Raymond allegedly committed intentional or criminally negligent mistreatment and battery of a child under seventeen which caused "serious bodily injury" or "neurological impairment."

Documents say that Raymond was arrested on April 7 and May 9 of 2022 for three felony counts of cruelty to a juvenile, and one felony count of second-degree cruelty to a juvenile.

Former workers enter plea in Lakeside Academy teen's death

KALAMAZOO, Mich — Two former Lakeside Academy workers entered a plea Thursday, both dropping two charges of child abuse in the death of 16-year-old Cornelius Fredericks.

Michael Mosley, 49, and Zachary Solis, 30, pleaded no contest to involuntary manslaughter, nearly three years after Fredericks' death.

“When you plead no contest, you are not saying your guilty, your not saying you are not guilty, you are saying you don’t want to contest to the charges anymore," Kalamazoo County Circuit Court Judge Gary Giguere said.

Fredericks was a resident at Lakeside Academy when seven staff members restrained him for throwing a sandwich in the cafeteria April 29, 2020, according to surveillance video.

Mosley and Solis put their weight across Fredericks' chest and abdomen for more than nine minutes during the 12-minute restraint, which left the teen unresponsive.

Mosley is 6 feet, 5 inches tall and weighs 265 pounds, while Solis is 6 feet, 2 inches tall and weighs 380 pounds, according to Kalamazoo County jail records.

Fredericks was transported to Bronson Hospital where he died just two days later on May 1 after going into cardiac arrest.

His death was later ruled a homicide as a result of restraint asphyxia, and as a direct result of the 12-minute restraint, specifically on his torso, according to the Kalamazoo County Medical Examiner.

Teens At Cook County Juvenile Jail Face Excessive Force, Extreme Isolation And Other Civil Rights Abuses, Watchdog Finds

A yearlong review of practices inside the Cook County Juvenile Temporary Detention Center found that staff often use dangerous and illegal forms of restraint and isolation, fail to keep adequate records, and are sometimes “entirely inhumane” to the teenagers they oversee.

So egregious are the conditions inside the five-story center on Chicago’s West Side, the authors of a state-sanctioned report published Friday recommend sweeping reforms — the most dramatic being shutting down the institution and starting over with a more community-based system.

The 96-page federally funded report authored by the nonprofit disability rights group Equip for Equality is just the latest in a string of critical findings by outside groups.

Injustice Watch previously reported on similar findings by a committee convened by Cook County Circuit Court Chief Judge Timothy Evans and a 2021 report on the facility’s alleged failure to provide special education services during the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Given the long-standing, serious, and pervasive problems identified in this report … and the profound impact they have had on the youth committed there, broader systemic reforms are essential,” concluded the authors of the most recent probe.

Deputy Director At Juvenile Detention Facility Fired, Higher-Up Reassigned After Alleged Sexual Assault Of Child

A child’s sexual assault allegation reportedly occurring at a Michigan juvenile detention center last week resulted in significant personnel changes at the facility Friday.

Mark Roland, now ex-deputy director of the Wayne County Juvenile Detention Facility, was ousted following the report of the alleged sexual assault of a minor. Another administrator, facility Director Brandon Barber was “reassigned to another position in the county,” Detroit News reported.

The 12-year-old-boy alleged he was sexually and physically assaulted at the facility, according to WXYZ.

Furthermore, seven additional employees faced suspension in the wake of the report, according to Michigan Department of Health and Human Services Elizabeth Hertel, who told the outlet that there are “seven other licensing investigations underway.”

Ontario youth group home chain hit with $60M proposed class-action over alleged ‘abuse’

A proposed class-action lawsuit has been filed against one of Ontario’s largest youth group home operators alleging that kids were treated in an “abusive” manner and the company’s key figures “enriched” themselves at the expense of vulnerable children in their care.

The Ontario-based law firm Siskinds LLP has launched the suit and is seeking $50 million in general and special damages and an additional $10 million in punitive damages on behalf of children or young persons who have received residential care from Hatts Off.

The lead plaintiff is Jamar Morrison, who was 12 years old when he was placed in a Hamilton-area group home operated by Hatts Off.

Morrison said he is still traumatized from his time as a resident and often wakes from “night terrors” with images of kids being physically restrained and screams still echoing in his mind

Paris Hilton describes being abducted from her bed, forced snuggling, and patients drugged with 'booty juice' at the abusive residential treatment centers where she spent her teen years

Paris Hilton has become an advocate for abolishing abusive residential-treatment centers for teens.

In a new essay, she described strangers taking her from her bed to a treatment facility.

The then-teenager thought the men who took her to the center would kill or sexually assault her.

"I'm about to be raped. I'm about to be murdered," Paris Hilton recalls thinking when, as a teenager, being jolted awake by a pair of men who then would take her from her home in handcuffs.

In a new essay for The Times of London, the hotel heiress recalled in detail being taken from her bed in the middle of the night and transported to one of a series of residential-treatment centers where she lived as a teen, and where she said she faced physical, sexual, and emotional abuse.

Her parents, who she said watched from their doorway as she cried for help, had called the men to take her to therapy for her "wild child" antics.

"One man clamped a sweaty palm over my mouth, wrenching my head back," Hilton wrote. "The other held up a pair of handcuffs."

Employee at CV Youth Center arrested, accused of having sexual relationship with juvenile

LOGAN, Utah (KUTV) — An employee of the Cache Valley Youth Center has been arrested after allegedly having a sexual relationship with a juvenile inmate.

Wesley Kendall Allen, 40, was booked into the Cache County Jail Thursday and faces several charges related to sexual abuse of a minor.

According to a probable cause statement, the juvenile girl, only identified to be between 14 to 17 years old, told detectives that she had a sexual relationship with Allen between mid-November and the end of December 2022 while staying at the facility.

Clock Tower Schools will reopen Glen Mills with additional oversight, says DHS

The Pennsylvania Department of Human Services has reached a settlement agreement with the Clock Tower Schools, clearing the way for the entity to operate at the site of the former Glen Mills Schools.
Located in Delaware County, the Glen Mills Schools was once the nation’s oldest all-boys reformatory school before an avalanche of abuse allegations spanning decades led to its closure in 2019.
The Clock Tower Schools, which includes eight individuals with ties to Glen Mills, has been trying to open on the grounds since July 2021. The two entities share a phone number, address, and attorney. The state Department of Human Services denied the Clock Tower Schools application for licensure in April 2022, which prompted the nonprofit to file an appeal.

Now, DHS has shifted its stance on the Clock Tower Schools’ attempt to revive Glen Mills.

Mentor at Millcreek youth treatment facility charged with sexual abuse

MILLCREEK — A mentor at a youth residential treatment center in Millcreek was charged Thursday with sexually abusing a resident.

Tristyn Soli Toki-Mauigoa, 25, of West Valley City, is charged in 3rd District Court with forcible sexual abuse, a second-degree felony.

Toki-Mauigoa was employed as a "youth mentor" at Oasis Ascent, 1624 E. 4500 South, according to Unified police.

A teen boy told investigators that Toki-Mauigoa "had always been inappropriate with them, calling them pet names and saying sexual things" and would also follow the teen into his room and then "pointed out that no one else was around and they could 'do stuff,'" according to charging documents.

On one day, the boy said that Toki-Mauigoa began kissing and inappropriately touching him and then watched him undress, the charges state.

When police confronted Toki-Mauigoa about the allegations, "he replied, 'OK,'" according to the charges.

Police also reviewed surveillance video from the facility "and observed (the boy) and Toki-Mauigoa enter and exit (the boy's) room several times before remaining in the room for approximately 16 minutes," according to the charges.

Prosecutors say Toki-Mauigoa "preyed upon (the boy's) vulnerable emotional state." They also note in the court documents that during the police investigation, evidence was uncovered that Toki-Mauigoa "had previously video recorded minors at another treatment center for youth while the minors were in minimal clothing."

Former employee at Institute for the Deaf and Blind charged with sexual abuse of a student

TALLADEGA, Ala. (WBRC/Gray News) - A former employee at the Alabama Institute for the Deaf and Blind is accused of sexually abusing a student under the age of 12 while working for the school, according to authorities.

Talladega police said they arrested Robert Godbold on Friday and charged him with sodomy and having sex with a student who attended the school where he was employed.

A spokesperson with the institute told WBRC that it was notified of the charges brought against Godbold on Jan. 19 and said the criminal sexual activity did not take place on the institute’s grounds.
