« I suppose it was about a year ago when we started if I can cast my mind that far back. It’s always a case of getting together and feeling out the moods of each of us when we meet with instruments for the first time in six months. »
“We began as always, playing around and fooling about for two days, playing anything we wanted, like standards, our own material or anything that comes to us, and slowly but surely we develop a feel that takes us on to the new material. Some of the new stuff came directly from this approach, like ‘Trampled Under Foot’ which was just blowing out, and some comes from Jonesy or Pagey or myself – seldom myself – bringing along some structure which needs working on. Then the four of us inflict our own venom on it to develop the idea. »
« Recording took about four months which was strung out over a much longer period. “It sounds a long time but the whole essence of the band is that we do what we want to do when we want to do it. It’s no race for us. We’ve got no deadlines to meet and when we finally do give something then it’s got to be just dead right. We have a stride, a gait, that, if it was adjusted, would be very detrimental to the way we are. »

« According to photographer Terry Spencer, « This was taken on Robert Plant’s 300-acre estate on the remote west coast of Wales. He didn’t want the exact location disclosed. It was hilly, with dense woodland and steep ravines. It rained most of the time we were there. I was just watching a Peanuts cartoon because the news from everywhere are so disgusting and sad, and suddenly I realized that it was Snoopy and Linus live, on 27 May 1972, in Amsterdam, providing the voice-over for Robert as he pretends to shout. This is the original sound from the cartoon. Do you think I’m right?! Or that I’m definitely deaf?! Or is this yet another uncredited borrowing from Led Zep?

« My five minutes at the Stage — Led Zeppelin, June 1973 Los Angeles Forum

As a broke teenager I could only afford the $6.50 nosebleed seats, but I did it to get as close as possible to Led Zeppelin, and proving it by capturing some great images.

Once Led Zeppelin started performing it took nearly 30 minutes to get from my seat to the Forum floor. The Forum had ticket/seat checkpoints everywhere, and I talked, squeezed, and worked my way through every one of them with a ticket that technically put me nowhere near where I was headed. Once on the floor, it took another thirty minutes to work my way to the front row where I patiently waited more. Kneeling in the aisle next to the front row, watching the one security guard. When he looked my way I raised my camera and he gloriously gave the nod that it was okay to come up. That was it — that was my window.

I got five minutes with my arms resting on the stage to steady the camera. Five minutes, 22 shots (about 15 ‘good’ ones’). I was shooting 35mm color slide film - Ektachrome, ISO 100. Color slide film was underpowered for stage lighting, so I had the lab push the film and just hoped something would come out right - no idea if any of them would be sharp, or if the exposure was even close.

I didn’t know it then, but I wouldn’t see those images for another 52 years where they sat in various closets and storage units. »

Contact sheet, photos Barry Plummer, Bath Festival, 6/28/1970.
I love so much Robert playing harmonica, the harmonica part was recorded in Vancouver. As you know the band went on tour with the master tapes from Led Zeppelin II and now and then stopped into a studio to record parts. How hard they worked is unbelievable.
