Sibyls Shrine is a new artist residency program for Black women, womxn, trans women, and femmes who are mothers and identify as artists, creatives, and/or activists in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
For these womxn, the challenges of parenting in combination with systemic racism and sexism often make the barriers to entry into the art world insurmountable. The Sibyls Shrine residency program uplifts Black creative mothers with opportunities for skill-sharing, self-care, safe space, and financial support in an effort to further develop their craft and presence in the art world. BECAUSE OF BLACK WOMEN!!! Since I’ve started doing this work for black women including myself - working on a survival guide film honoring the ways black women have held it down. Deep in research and raising money I’m really starting to understand and the enormity the severe depths in which black women are disregarded. Maybe it’s because black women refuse to ask? Maybe because we are (historically and presently and future-ly😏) TAKING CARE OF EVERYONE ELSE. I don’t know. I’m seeing the way we fight for everyone else and THE MURDERERS WHO KILLED BREONNA TAYLOR STILL HAVE MOT BEEN ARRESTED. I’m raising money and support for black mothers and ITS SO MUCH HARDER THAN I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE. Even asking black women but that’s because they are so stretched as it is. It’s a conundrum for me. Anyways I’m not even sure how but EVERYBODY DO BETTER FOR BLACK WOMEN!!! by @sibylsshrine

THIS SATURDAY 11am @sccpgh Join artists Amber Doe, Bekezela Mguni, and Alisha B Wormsley for a closing ritual at Contemporary Craft, co-hosted by Sibyls Shrine.
Rooted in the spirit of Revolutionary Care, this gathering centers Black femme care, sovereignty, and collective healing as both practice and offering.
Through guided ritual, participants are invited into a shared space of reflection, grounding, and intention-setting—honoring ancestral knowledge, embodied presence, and the power of communal care. Drawing from each artist’s interdisciplinary practice, the ritual weaves together gesture, voice, and spiritual inquiry to hold space for restoration and affirmation.
As a closing to the exhibition, this event offers a moment to gather, witness, and carry forward the exhibition’s call: to imagine and enact care as a liberatory force, sustained through community, ritual, and the ongoing work of remembrance.

Note: A “Sound Bath”, led by artist Ayana Sade, will be offered. You are welcome to bring a cushion or yoga mat to participate in the program!

Sibyls Shrine is a network of Black artists who m/other in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania—and beyond. We are an art collective and residency program rooted in our own radical care, rest and support. Sibyls Shrine is a homage to the Sibyls, the original priestesses of the African goddess Mami Wata. The term was used to name the divine status, quality, and nature of the matriarchal guardians. Sibyls Shrine was created in 2019 by Alisha B Wormsley, developed with Jessica Gaynelle Moss, in partnership with Shiftworks Community + Public Arts.

📚 🍄 🌈 ☀️ This July we are so grateful for the mycelial connections that bring us together! Celebrating an abundance of incredible literary offerings that grow beyond the page. We are excited to welcome author, educator, and mycophile, Maria Pinto @aravensgrace to Pittsburgh to share from her powerful new book, Fearless, Sleepless, Deathless: What Fungi Taught Me about Nourishment, Poison, Ecology, Hidden Histories, Zombies and Black Survival on Thursday, July 16th at 7pm at @whitewhalebks. She will be joined in conversation by local writer and illustrious fairy marsh monster Almah LaVon! @agentsubrosa

Naturalist, forager, and educator Maria Pinto offers a stunning debut book that uncovers strange and beautiful fungal connections between the natural and human worlds. She mingles reportage, research, memoir, and nature writing, touching on topics that range from Black farmers’ domestication of the unforgettable aroma of truffles to the possibility that enslaved people wielded mycological poisons against their enslavers. Pinto brings a new perspective and a distinctive literary voice to this mix of environmental and lived history, and every page sings with her enthusiasm for the networks in which we are embedded: fungal, ecological, ancestral, and communal. Join her in pursuit of beautiful, perplexing, delicious, and deadly mushrooms as she explores this understudied kingdom’s awe-inspiring diversity and discovers how fungi have been used by people, especially those on the margins, for survival, pleasure, revelation, and revolution.

White Whale Bookstore and the Flower Farm Residency are grateful to present this collaborative event with the support of @blackunicornlibraryproject, @cuttingroot, @dreamsofhopeorg, @writepittsburgh, @ujamaacollective15219, and @sibylsshrine. The reading & conversation is hosted by local artist, librarian, and educator, Bekezela Mguni.

Revolutionary Care is a daily act of resistance through love, boundary-setting, self-determination, and visionary dreaming. This exhibition at Conteporary Craft brings together three Sibyls— our founder Alisha B Wormsley and members Amber Doe and Bekezela Mguni— who each demonstrate and articulate care in their own distinct visual languages. Through practices of individual and collective care, and by activating the power of generative and restorative healing, this exhibition opens a gateway—calls us to imagine and build a society rooted in liberation and a pathway toward freedom. Care is both an inheritance and a revolutionary future, carried forward in the gesture of making.

Join us for a free opening reception on Friday, May 29 from 5:30 – 8:30 PM. There will also be a talk with the artists on Saturday, May 30 at 10:30 am. We would love to celebrate our opening with you this weekend!

Revolutionary Care is on view from May 29, 2026 – September 5, 2026 at Contemporary Craft. Their galleries are open to the public Monday – Saturday, 10 AM – 5PM. by @sibylsshrine

This spring, we were honored to sponsor a rest residency for Alecia Dawn Young! Alecia is an incredible artist, mother, PhD student, and Pittsburgh-based member of the Sibyls Shrine community since 2020. Through this residency, she received funding toward restorative spa treatments and much-needed rest during her time away in LA.

The Sibyls Shrine Rest Residency is a special project that offers Black artists who mother the vital space to pause, recharge, and heal. This platform provides an opportunity to immerse oneself in restorative practice, prioritizing self-care, wellness, and community while rejuvenating one’s creative endeavors and personal growth. We are grateful to provide these essential moments of rest for Sibyls, like Alecia, throughout the year.

@thealeciadawn , thank you for allowing us to support you in this moment of self-care and restoration. by @sibylsshrine
