Even though looking at return predictions & the state of fisheries in the PNW can lead to despair about our native anadromous fish stocks, I am feeling encouraged after a weekend of fellowship with passionate, like minded folks fighting the good fight to preserve & restore these incredibly threatened, yet resilient fish. O. Mykiss might consume most of my fishy thoughts, I will never forget my brief, but profound, encounter with this fine example of what nature is capable of. If we just let the systems that were in place long before we were here stay intact. Big thanks to @nativefishsociety @blazing.arrow @mszafka @drift_see @jeffersonflywater & everyone else at the southern river stewards gathering. **Don't worry, despite the color on this big buck, this was 4-5 miles from the salt, still had a nice entourage of sea lice, & was nowhere near a redd**. ( also, yes, that reel is scorched & dead 💀) taken in State of Jefferson by @sicc_fly_bro_86

I want to wish a happy belated birthday to this gem. @sunnyjunesmiles has to put up with a lot hanging out w/ me ( fishless weekend excursions, my general homeless appearance, how many remixes of the same song can I play in a row before she kills me, etc.) But really, a guy couldn't ask for a more kind, beautiful, hard working, supportive, fish loving adventure partner. Well it only took 3 years of flogging this tiny Arizona trout stream after work to get a solid hookup on one of these bruisers. Lots of miles on the boots finally paid off. Spent most of the summer working & playing in Idaho. The highlight definitely was a 2 week raft trip on the middle & main fork of the salmon river with some of the best people around. The fishing on the river was lights out but I really enjoyed exploring some of the side creeks like this one here. Proof that #onelastcast pays off. After 10min of fighting in the dark, I was sure I had foul-hooked a fish, but when we were both finally ready, it just turned out to be this toad hooked right in the corner... Thinking back on the last two weeks in September that I got to spend chasing elk with a stick & string in the heat of the rut. For me, it is the ultimate hunt. Leaving camp I wasn't disappointed that I didn't get a bull down, but that I would have to wait another year to run with the bulls again. It is so much more than harvesting or hunting, to come home fully connected, humbled, and filled with respect for these amazing animals and the indigenous people that were doing this for ages before us. It is impossible to describe what it is like to carry on this timeless tradition. This #obsidian point was almost perfect except for the broken tip. It was probably a spear point, or maybe a large game #arrowhead..
