And just like that, the day arrived where I could no longer take a picture against #MyPinkWall. This is the second time I'm leaving #Bangalore (for good); the first time I did, I was just 12 and didn't have much to say. I eventually returned (of course) and the second time I'm leaving, I can't stop thinking about just how much this city was part of in making me who I am. Often times I wonder if attributes like these get over credited undeservingly just due to their arbitrary presence in the background. But as I was waiting to board my plane in #DeepThoughts, I realized, as arbitrary and uncontrolled circumstances they maybe, they are not just in the background, but take active part in shaping who you see yourself now as a person, though you didn't actively choose any of them. I began to wonder, what if my parents decided to raise me in one of their home towns, or what if my dad had decided to take that job in Wellington, or what if my mom decided to raise me as a single parent, or what if I didn't initially take up engineering (or, God forbid, finished engineering half assedly), or what if my father was actually a nice person, or what if I had flunked a year in college, OR what if (as how every other event was solely a random occurrence) Bangalore was not even a part of the equation? Amidst all the what ifs, I realized there is absolutely no way to predict even precisely, what you would be like now in all the alternative scenarios. As long as you are happy and content about the person you have become in the due course and steadily continue to improve and improvise, the universe along with you has done its job. So it's only appropriate to thank everything and everyone around you, blindly, without further interrogation, for what you've become. Finally the gifts are wrapped to place under the tree. But if someone accidentally opened it I would be embarrassed because it isn't what it looks like..... To say the least everything is empty. They are so beautiful and glossy that anyone could easily be duped, but that doesn't change the fact that it's deceiving. This is so emblematic of how we are (forced to be in many cases) in real. So this Christmas lets not imitate these tinsel wrapped nothings and make the effort to be authentic because the real gift any day is to be genuine as a person.
Someone famously quoted that no relationship is truly authentic if you're not 100% true and authentic. And any deed you do can be of any authenticity only if you are genuine and authentic as a person.
And as for deceiving vanity it's perfectly OK as long as you know it's just the decorations!

A bad picture could still hold such significance! This used to be my best friend in school and I met him after 14 years on his wedding day a week back and finally hung out today. It was so overwhelming to know how both of us remembered the little insignificant and inconsequential events and things we did together as kids! Infact for the first half hour I was hyperventilating that my thoughts rambled faster than Boeing 747's GEnx engines. It was totally a real walk through memory lane. |
