Mirror Lake Overpass, Route 150, Utah

Totally touristy, I know, but, c’mon - look at that view. I love this photograph. Utah is incredible. All of Route 150 was nuts; totally gorgeous.

---

Sara and I spent a week in Utah. I wasn’t prepared for how awesome everything was visually - from the Salt Flats to Guardsman’s Pass to Antelope Island - the whole week was filled with breath-taking mountains and landscapes. I love me my NH White Mountains, but this was a whole other level.

Less than two hours from the Salt Lake City metro area, Mirror Lake Highway stretches 42 miles along state Route 150 and is one of the most popular mountain driving routes in the state. It begins in Kamas, Utah and ascends high into the Uinta Mountains cresting at 10,715 feet at Bald Mountain Pass, and then descends past Hayden Peak, Kletting Peak and Holiday Park Peak before meeting with the Wyoming border. This scenic byway has many overlooks, picnic areas, waterfalls, lakes, trails and campgrounds. This mountain range is one of the few in North America that runs east to west rather than north to south.

Antelope Island State Park, Utah

Antelope Island was one of the last places we visited during our trip. I think it might have been my favorite place; wide open vistas, big sky and the Bison. We spent an entire day driving around the island and we found some large groups of buffalo grazing and just doing their thing. There are a few small campgrounds on the island, and I would *absolutely* camp there if we had driven and had our camper. What an amazing place. Gorgeous.

Antelope Island State Park is the largest island in the Great Salt Lake, covering roughly 28,000 acres in Davis County, Utah. It is famous for its large, free-roaming American bison herd (around 600–700 animals), pronghorn antelope, bighorn sheep, and mule deer. Designated as an International Dark Sky Park, making it a prime destination for stargazing and astrophotography.

Guardsman Pass Scenic Byway, Utah

We stayed in Park City, Utah for the week courtesy of a friend so we were very close to Guardsman Pass and we did multiple trips back and forth. It goes from lush mountains into very rocky mountains in a short span and the variety of landscape was *chefs kiss*. At one point Sara mapped out an old mining tunnel she wanted to check out, and we hiked up to it, and it was perfectly bear-sized, so I got scared and we left shortly after getting there. I’m a baby. I don’t like being eaten by bears.

This seasonal byway is fully paved and climbs approximately 7 miles (11 km) to the summit at 9,717 feet (2,962 m) elevation, offering panoramic mountain views, vibrant wildflowers, and stunning fall foliage. This well-trafficked pass is a must-drive for outdoor enthusiasts, offering some of the best mountain views near Heber Valley.

Bonneville Salt Flats, Interstate 80, Utah

The longest drive during our trip out to Utah was going from Park City out to the Bonneville Salt Flats. It seemed like it took all day to get out there, and there are expansive parts of Interstate 80 that are just completely empty; lanes going in both directions surrounded by salt flatland as far as you can see. The only gas station has one of those “last gas for 66 miles” signs before you get off the Interstate and end up at the Delle Sinclair station (“where the hell is Delle?” stickers available for a price).

After running around the Salt Flat rest area, we headed to the Bonneville race area - where you can drive your car on the salt at fast speeds. We took the paved road as far as it would go, but stopped there, and didn’t drive on the salt, as we had a rental car and I’m a wimp. So much salt. I can still taste it in the air.

Roughly 90% common table salt (sodium chloride), with a crust thickness ranging from under an inch at the edges to nearly 5 feet in the center.

Jordanelle State Park, Herber City, Utah

A short drive from Park City was Jordanelle State Park - a great reservoir area that had all these really awesome dead trees growing out of where the land meets the water. We spent a whole afternoon wandering around the park and making photographs of stuff, but I loved this lone trunk, watching out over the water.

Nestled in the rolling mountains north of Heber City, Utah sits the beautiful Jordanelle Reservoir, fed by the Provo River and impounded by the Jordanelle Dam. Its two distinct recreation areas, Hailstone and Rock Cliff, offer a variety of recreation opportunities. Spend a day or weekend picnicking, camping, boating, or hiking at either or both destinations.

Built in 1995 this reservoir and state park have quickly become a popular vacation destination for water sport enthusiasts. The Rock Cliff Recreation Area is a tranquil retreat perfect for birders, photographers and nature lovers thanks to elevated boardwalks and interpretive trails that run through the area. While Rock Cliff has a nature center, standard walk-in campgrounds and basic amenities, outdoor adventurers head for Hailstone to access abundant options to camp, fish, wakeboard, waterski, canoe or motorboat from Hailstone and its eight-lane boat ramp.

Bonneville Salt Flats Rest Area, Interstate 80, Utah

So let’s talk about the weird obsession I developed with the rest area structures at the Salt Flats rest stop. These giant concrete covers; some had picnic tables under them, some had parking spots under them, I don’t know what the attraction was, but I couldn’t stop making photographs of them. I could probably make a whole book of photographs of the Salt Flat Rest Stop, but I limited it to a handful to share. I love the shape and the curve of them. I instantly knew these would look incredible in black & white, and I’m sure Sara was like “Hey, enough of that! We’ve got the Salt Flats to look at!” but I kept going back to photograph them again and again. The rest area also served as where you can access the actual flats and walk out onto them.

Big Cottonwood Canyon, Utah

This photograph is all about that little patch of light that illuminates that little cluster of trees on the bottom left of the image. Other images I took had that area in shadow, but the clouds parted and gave that little corner of my composition some light, and it all fell into place. We hung around on a park bench and ate sandwiches while people watching and listening to the traffic pass by in the canyon.

The canyon is accessed by The Big Cottonwood Canyon Senic Byway (SR-190), which runs its length to Guardsman Pass at the top of the canyon, allowing travel to Park City in the summer months.
