Our last original release, « Your Mind », dropped August 2025. Shortly after we played two of our biggest shows to date, opening for Westend and Layton Giordani respectively: two of our biggest inspirations as artists. Since those shows however, we’ve dropped one edit on SoundCloud, played 2 all-locals shows (both of which were great times), and released ZERO original music. So what gives? A couple of thoughts. 1. We’ve been told from friends across the industry that labels were, and still are, becoming more risk averse. Their criteria has shifted, and that could have impacted us. 2. Our personal lives demanded significant attention from us, with us both moving out of our shared apartments to different municipalities in Vancouver. 3. Most significantly, we allowed rejection to « get to us ». We began thinking our sound wasn’t trendy enough, began veering further from our vision for SOTS, and became even more demotivated as our unauthentic selves got rejected even more than our authentic selves had been prior. For a long time we refused the advice of our peers to self-release originals for fear that it would cheapen our brand and hurt our egos. After reflecting on the last 12 months, we’ve come to realize that what is most important is that we’re proud of our output, no one else. If we think a piece of music fits our vision and our quality standard, we will release it, wether with a label partner or not. And with this change in strategy we also commit to being more vulnerable and authentic. The name « Sides of the Sun » is meant to reflect the many styles and emotions of music, and now also the realities, successes, and struggle of creating it. Our first release « Breathe » will drop Oct 16th and we can’t wait to share more about it soon :) -Xander & Austin by @sidesofthesun
