In 2024, @sidewalkspecials were asked to help clear an overcrowded shelter, a situation where good intentions had led to over 300 animals living together in filthy conditions, with limited resources, no access to veterinary care and minimal human interaction 😔

South Africa’s severely under resourced and completely overwhelmed welfare system, combined with current soaring inflation, is making the sustainability of physical shelters unrealistic for smaller organisations. One of the many reasons @sidewalkspecials have always been 100% foster based.

Taking all that into account, and taking the blame game out of it, @sidewalkspecials focus became finding safe forever homes for our new intakes - River being the most concerning intake of all…

When the clever, sensitive ones suffer abuse - they don’t forget so quickly, they don’t adapt so easily and they often fall through the cracks in rescue 💔

Thank God for foster homes, ‘foster fails’ and families that take their pets with them when they emigrate!! 🥰

His owners called him “old and aggressive.” He was only 6 and just wanted to be loved 💔

Finn had spent all six years of his life chained outside when his owners got a younger dog and wanted him put down. But when @sidewalkspecials took him in, Rachael couldn't believe the affectionate dog in front of her had really spent his entire life on a chain. Dodo producer @valentinathedodo shares how Finn finally got his chance at a real home, with a family who already had a very familiar-looking Sidewalk Specials alum.

Dealing with old dogs in the township is a relatively new thing for @sidewalkspecials . Simply put - before our clinic made sterilisation and vet care accessible in De Doorns - the township’s dogs didn’t reach old age...

Most dogs live well with their families and reach old age at home, with our clinic allowing owners to release their aging pets with dignity when the time is right. ♥️

But some dogs need us to step in and move them to a gentler setting with more resources - Simba is one such dog.

Simba is currently an outside dog, he’s suffering with age related arthritis alongside a fresh leg injury. We want to give him X-rays, a full blood analysis and prescribe medication for a pain free life.

if you can help @sidewalkspecials with Simba’s vet bills, please use the donation link in our page bio or head to:

Simba is approx 10 years old, he’s a grumpy little old man but is harmless and used to living with dogs and cats 😊

Last week, our Driven By Nature team was back in the field with @sidewalkspecials for another sterilisation clinic.

From collecting and transporting animals to distributing food and lending a hand wherever needed, we were glad to be part of the work happening on the ground.

A heartfelt thank you to the Sidewalk Specials team for welcoming us back and for the care and dedication you bring to every clinic.

We’re looking forward to joining you again this week! 🐾

They knew earning Tessa’s trust was going to take time 😅❤️

Dodo editor @valentinathedodo shares the story of Tessa, a spicy senior who wanted absolutely nothing to do with her rescuers. @sidewalkspecials worked with her family so Tessa could stay at home while still getting the care she needed, and kept showing up no matter how much she growled at them. When Tessa eventually needed a safer place to live, the relationship they'd built with her family meant they were finally able to take her in. Now she’s looking for a family who understands her needs and will love her exactly as she is ❤️

Tessa is available for adoption in South Africa. Help support Sidewalk Specials rescue more dogs like Tessa. Click the link in our bio to learn how 💗

They never expected to find Eggy like this 😭

@sidewalkspecials had known Eggy for years, so when they were back in her neighborhood, they went to check on her and were devastated to find her severely underweight and in terrible shape. Dodo editor Valentina shares how Rachael and the team stepped back into Eggy’s life and helped her become unrecognizable all over again in the best way.

A beautiful thing is happening in the De Doorns township...

When the community know of a neglected/ abused/ unwanted dog, they’re approaching the owner themselves and asking them to surrender the dog to @sidewalkspecials ❤️

We then get a call out to come and rescue said animal, they even help us film the rescue and get the surrender forms signed...🥹

You see, most people are kind at heart, and when given the access to rescue and vet care, will use it for the greater good. ♥️

When people attack township owners in our comments section, we wince. Because we know how many kind hearted humans living in those townships are reading those untrue, unfair and unkind comments. 😔

How they must feel knowing the outside world thinks so little of them, never having even met them...

Let’s all be kind, rather than ‘right’, and see South Africa heal! 🇿🇦

Temple is our latest community rescue - four years old, wire-haired terrier mix, good with dogs kids and cats.

If you’re based in Cape Town and surrounds and can offer Temple a forever home please complete an application at:

Temple’s suffering from malnutrition, anemia and secondary infections on his burn wounds (chemical burns are often found on dogs that go scavenging for food on local dump sites) ❤️‍🩹
