CONTEXT SHIFT 2.0.1.9. - 2.0.2.4.

The context from which we view art and culture in the streets has shifting dramatically for the past 5 years, since 2019. The epic film AKIRA, by Katsuhiro Otomo, predicted the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and the story eerily parallels the catastrophic events and social upheavels following the end of 2019. We now view that film from a different context after Covid-19, the Olympics, and the worldwide uprisings. The context of face masks in street fashion shifts each year following the pandemic, just as the context of public protest has shifted since the murder of George Floyd. Both Covid and the BLM uprisings of 2020 dramatically changed the world of graffiti writing, the artistic action continuing forward and upward, political or not. Now, after the inclusion in the 2024 Olympics, the street dance called Breaking is also viewed from a different context. How will Breaking, and the broader street dance culture, be affected by this event? Will popular culture acknowledge the social and economic disparities of 20th century Bronx that shaped this art form? How will new waves of street dancers work together with all of the dancers who created, and continue, this movement?

This mural is dedicated to the worldwide streetdance community. Painted in the summer of 2024 by YyOURSELF, a graffiti and cartoon collaborative, before the premiere of Breaking in the summer olympics. The mural features a figure in a dance pose, one that could be in both breaking & house dance art forms, wearing a hijab and gesturing a peace sign. This figure reflects the local residents surrounding the mural and the creators of both Breaking and House dance: black & latino/a/e youth. The message “Teach Kids Graffiti, Breaking, & House Dance” is an expression for a creative future, one that acknowledges and embraces the creativity of queer folk and people of color. We are guests in this amazing world of STREETDANCE.
