The House Between // Axonometric/GIF/Elevation/Section

The House Between is a conversation of a duplex located in north berkeley. The project starts with the exploration of two precedents: The House with Qualities by Paul Andersen and The House without Qualities by O.M. Ungers and becomes a conversation and negotiation of the two plans.

The House with Qualities presents precision and alignment despite its asymmetry in elevation and plan. And what I appreciated from this exploration is this conversation between the gable, window, and poche.

The House without Qualities is a synthesis of spaces through a central bay and neighboring aisles that create axis of circulation and become spaces of gathering.

The House Between is organized through a circulation axis offset from the central void which is covered by a gabled roof that continues the projection of the gables. The units are rotated 90 degrees through this negotiation of the bow tie stair acting as a hinge to bring the user from an open social plan guided by the House without Qualities to a cellular private plan guided by the House with Qualities.

The hallways on the 2nd level continue to the end of the perimeter leading to these pinched balconies. And the figures that come into conversation in The House Between are the stair, gable, and window.

The gables organize the rooms and align to the pitches and dips, allowing for the occupant to experience the rotated plan. taken in University of California, Berkeley by @sidikaylarch
