My Nanny went on to glory today, peacefully, after several days surrounded by the people that love her most. She was 96 and very proud of it. Patsy was the most steadfast, social and strong-willed person I’ve ever known, an icon in my life and in the lives of so many others.

She had outlived all of her friends and was still running around doing her errands until a few months ago. She had people at Hardee’s (where she often went twice a day), God’s Little Storehouse, her church, and the hair salon that became her community. She worked until she was 95 doing the books at my dad’s dental office. Toward the end she was just going in on Thursdays to write the checks, but she took it very seriously and loved to work.

She also loved watching baseball (Atlanta Braves), pampering the dogs in the family, goodwill, chicken “tenduhs” and buying me every vintage crocheted blanket she could find in Giles County.

I told her last night a part of me will always be riding around with her in her periwinkle Crown Vic listening to country radio and eating KFC. She is such a big part of who I am. I’m comforted and proud that I’ll take her memory, love and strength with me everywhere I go. by @sidneylanecreative
