Protected Voices is about the shift that happens when a person feels protected enough to speak, express, or confront. That protection is not something everyone gets to assume.

Growing up within the diaspora, safety was never guaranteed. Voice becomes conditional under those terms, withheld until the space allows it.

Bearing Point draws from Brutalist environments shaped by weight, repetition, and structural exposure, and from a Modernist precision that defines the current state of the self. Growing up in East London within a diasporic context those conditions were not chosen.

The concrete carries the load. What sits alongside it is deliberate, precise, a clarity that comes through maturity that occupies the same space without relieving it.

The sculpture holds its position under strain, through the specific logic of how load is distributed when the structure does not soften.

Before I put brush to canvas, I need to understand the structure I’m working within. Knowing the framework before I start is what gives me the freedom to be spontaneous when I’m actually painting. The process isn’t a constraint, it’s what makes the flow state possible.

This diagram maps how The Room That Wasn’t was built, from the Brutalist memory that grounds the work, through the inherited logic that already existed before the first mark, to the point where that fixed framework gets reconfigured into something new.

Some systems existed long before technology caught up with them. The rules for how a room is built, how a structure holds weight, how space is organised, all of that was already established. What’s changed is how we render it.

This painting sits between the physical and the digital. The concrete is literally in the canvas. The wireframe leads the digital. The room it references never existed as a built space, but the memory of it is real. by @sidsanni
