This past summer, as part of my senior project at College of the Atlantic, I paddled the Saco River from source to sea. Putting in at the headwaters of Bartlett, NH, and taking out at the mouth of the river in Saco, Maine, where we reached the Atlantic Ocean. The 130 mile trip was full of memorable, thought provoking, beautiful, challenging, and adventurous moments.
Starting as a shallow, rocky stream, we watched the river and surrounding landscapes change, shift, and gradually morph into the ocean as we traveled downstream. We saw the diversity of wildlife the river and its critically important riparian zones host, including eagles, trout, deer, oaks, maples, kingfishers, catbirds, and mergansers, to name a few. We also witnessed the increasing urbanization and development along the river as we portaged around seven dams and passed through the towns. All the while, we reflected on the complex relationships people have and have had with this river. To continue this project I will keep exploring the human ecology of this river.
I feel so grateful for each stroke of our paddles, each step of our portages, each campfire-cooked meal (sorry for getting rocks and sand in a few), each rope swing, each night under the stars, “each sunrise, each sunset”, and for both of the amazing people who joined me on this trip.
