“My body is the literature of the ocean.”

Syaman Rapongan is from an island near Taiwan, a member of the Tao people who lack a written language. 𝙄 𝘿𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙢 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙊𝙘𝙚𝙖𝙣 follows him as he reflects on his connection to the ocean and passes down the wisdom of his people to the next generation: his son.

In a culture where stories are carried through people rather than text, 𝙄 𝘿𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙢 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙊𝙘𝙚𝙖𝙣 captures an oral tradition on film, weaving together storytelling, memory and lived experience in a deeply personal cinematic portrait.

So…Is there a “right” way to experience the arts? 🤔🎭

We asked our Festival Directors how they approach creative works, and whether there’s truly a “right” way to experience them.

What’s your take? Comment below and share your thoughts!

Some of you may remember 𝘞𝘢𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘍𝘰𝘳 𝘈𝘶𝘥𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦 from SIFA 2025, or perhaps its earlier beginnings at SIFA 2024’s works-in-progress platform, 𝘛𝘰𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘳𝘰𝘸 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘛𝘰𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘳𝘰𝘸.

Join Nine Years Theatre co-founders Nelson and Mia as they reflect on a work that began at SIFA 2024, evolved into a full SIFA 2025 commission, and went on to travel from Singapore to Milan, where it received the Special Mention of the Public Jury Award – and most recently, Festival Off Avignon in France.

𝘞𝘢𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘍𝘰𝘳 𝘈𝘶𝘥𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦 is proof that local theatre can resonate far beyond our shores when artists are given the space, support and opportunity to grow. Arts House Group is proud that platforms such as SIFA can help new works develop from early ideas into productions that reach audiences in Singapore and around the world.✨

This year’s festival may be over, but the SIFA team at Arts House Group is already beavering away on the 2027 edition. It’s going to be very, 𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙮 special so don’t miss it! 😉

What does it mean to dedicate your life to the arts?

We sat down with our very own festival director Chong Tze Chien to find out!

Initially interested in the literary arts, Tze Chien fell in love with theatre and never looked back. With decades of experience behind him, he is now the individual overseeing the creative side of the Festival he grew up with.

From audience member to commissioned artist to Festival Director – Tze Chien’s SIFA story is one of coming full circle.

See his vision come to life at SIFA 2027! Mark your calendars, and we’ll see you there!

Selling out all its shows at SIFA 2026, Last Rites brings together five veteran actors to imagine their ideal final performance, weaving their real lives and memories into the work.

In this behind-the-scenes conversation, director and playwright Liu Xiaoyi reflects on how Last Rites has evolved with its performers over the years and the future of a piece that can only exist because of the people who perform in it.

Kuo Pao Kun was a theatre-maker who learned the various facets of the craft, from playwriting and directing to lighting and prop design. Looking to the arts as a way for Singaporeans to form a unique culture and identity, be it individual, communal or even nationwide; Kuo Pao Kun was deeply committed to creating spaces for new and alternative art forms and artists. Among those he inspired is our very own festival director!

Meet the woman who taught all six cohorts of @sotasg’s earliest students!

Though not born in Singapore, Christina Sergeant contributed generously and enthusiastically to our theatre scene. She founded a women’s theatre collective, introduced professional mime, and was among the first to bring theatre to schools.
