Dedicated to all the lovely ladies and dashing gents of the silent era, with a sprinkle of early stage actresses and Ziegfeld girls. ✨
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
It all started with a photograph. ✨

In 2010, I came across a picture of silent film actress Florence La Badie and was immediately captivated. It was like finding a haunted portrait. She was absolutely stunning, almost ethereal, and I wanted to know everything about her.

What surprised me was how little information I could find. Here was a woman who had been one of the biggest film stars of the 1910s, yet there were only a handful of photographs and very little written about her online.

Florence’s life also had a tragic ending. She died following a car accident in 1917, at just 29 years old and at the height of her fame. I’ve always been fascinated by the more morbid side of history, so between her haunting beauty, tragic death, and seemingly forgotten legacy, I was hooked.

And then I discovered that her birthday was April 27th, just one day before mine on April 28th. I don’t care that it might be just a silly little coincidence, but it made me feel even more connected to her. As though I needed another reason to be fascinated by this woman!

I wanted other people to know who she was. I wanted her name to be remembered.

And that curiosity soon grew into something bigger. There were countless other silent film stars whose names and stories had faded into obscurity. Everyone knew Chaplin, Keaton, and Pickford, but what about the hundreds of other actors and actresses who helped shape the film industry?

I wanted to tell their stories. And so, Silence Is Platinum was born.

I didn’t start this blog with the intention of creating a “brand” or anything resembling what it has become today. I simply loved silent films, loved researching forgotten people, and loved writing. It was 2010, blogs were everywhere, and it seemed like the perfect place to share my discoveries.

Sixteen years later, Florence is still my muse. She’s the reason I started writing about silent film history, and why I continue to believe that even the most forgotten stars deserve to have their stories told.

All because of one beautiful photograph of a woman who lived more than a century ago. ✨

I’ve been trying to figure out how to put into words just how much your kindness and support have meant to me over the past weeks. When I shared my story, I had no idea how many people it would reach or how many of you would take the time to leave such thoughtful, heartfelt comments. To say I was overwhelmed would be an understatement.

It took me almost three years to find the courage to share something that has affected me so deeply. And even after I finally hit that post button, part of me wanted to run away and hide again. I was scared people were seeing me and seeing a disappointment. Being vulnerable, especially on such a public platform, is not something that comes easily to me. Nor is it easy for me to admit when I’m not doing okay.

I shared my experience because I hoped that someone else who had struggled with trauma or mental health might see themselves in my story and feel a little less alone. I also knew I needed to say it with the hope that I can stop avoiding and hiding from it.

What I didn’t expect was how many of you would make me feel seen, heard, and understood in return.
I’ve read so many of your comments, and while I haven’t been able to respond to everyone, please know how much your words have meant to me. I’m especially grateful to those of you who felt comfortable enough to share your own experiences. I know firsthand how difficult that can be so please know I hear you and I see you.

I’m still processing everything, and I still have a lot of healing to do. But sharing my story was something I had wanted to do for a very long time, and I’m grateful that I finally did. Thank you for reminding me that’s it okay to open up about battles you’ve been fighting in silence for so long and that people do care. And thank you for making this little silent film corner of IG feel like such a wonderful space.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you. -J ✨❤️ by @silenceisplatinum

I’ve tried to find the time and headspace to make this post more times than I can count.

For almost three years, I haven’t really known how to talk about this so I’ve just stored it in the attic of my mind. I found that making a video and actually saying it out loud was close to impossible due to situational mutism that comes with C-PTSD (at least in my case). Even writing it down was difficult.

One of the strangest things about trauma is what it can attach itself to. Something doesn’t have to be bad for your brain to associate it with a bad time. Sometimes the thing that gets caught in the wreckage is something you loved. I think that’s been one of the hardest things for me to understand. I know what happened with Edmund Gwenn was a good thing. I know it mattered to people. I know I should be able to look back at it with pride. But knowing something and being able to feel it are two very different things. For a long time, I’ve felt guilty about that. And I’ve felt guilty about Silence is Platinum, too.

I see the things I used to do here. The research. The stories. The cemetery visits. The campaigns. The excitement I had when I discovered something and couldn’t wait to tell all of you about it. Then I look at what I’ve been able to give this page lately, and sometimes I feel like I’m letting down this thing I spent so many years building. But I still love it. That’s the important part. I still get excited about silent film. I still want to tell stories about people everyone else has forgotten. That part of me is still here, even if accessing her has been harder for a while.

I wanted to share this personal story because I know I can’t be the only person who has looked at something they once loved and thought, “Why can’t I do this anymore? Where did that part of me go?” If you’ve experienced that, I hope this makes you feel a little less alone. Maybe that part of us isn’t gone. Maybe we just have to find our way back to it differently.

I’m trying. - J ✨❤️ by @silenceisplatinum
