The Room of Doors
“Imagine awareness as a room.
You sit quietly at its centre, while doors around you, above you and below you continually open. Each door is a possible path of attention: a memory, a sensation, a fear, a desire, an idea, a plan.
Sometimes a door captures you. Attention is drawn through it and begins travelling along its neural and conceptual pathways. A memory unfolds into other memories. A worry generates possible futures. An idea gathers associations. For a while, the world disclosed through that doorway can seem like the whole world.
Then something changes. You notice what has happened.

This recognition is metacognition: awareness of the activity of your own mind. Attention ceases to be completely identified with its current contents. You can follow the path further, choose another, or return to the centre.
The centre is not a state without thought. Nor is the aim to remain there permanently. Thinking, remembering, imagining and feeling require entering the doors. Life happens through them.
The difference lies in whether attention is captured without recognition, or whether some awareness of the larger room remains.
Returning to the centre widens the aperture. What occupied the whole field becomes one possibility within it. The thought is still there. The emotion is still there. The memory is still there. But other doors have become visible again.
Freedom of attention may begin here: not by closing the doors, but by learning that we do not have to disappear through every one that opens.”

THE HEART IS NOT A METAPHOR IN THE MYSTICAL TRADITIONS. IT IS AN ORGAN OF PERCEPTION

In Sufi teaching, the heart , the qalb, is the seat of divine knowledge. Not the emotional heart of sentiment, but the spiritual center that, when polished and emptied of self, becomes capable of receiving what the mind cannot reach.

Rumi’s entire body of work orbits this single premise: that the human being contains within itself a vessel for truth, and that the condition of that vessel determines what can enter it. Purity here does not mean moral hygiene. It means transparency,, the removal of everything that distorts, clouds, or deflects the light.

The Hermetic tradition described the same process through the metaphor of the mirror. A corroded surface reflects nothing clearly.

The Great Work of alchemy was not the transformation of lead into gold, it was the refinement of the inner substance until it could hold the light without distortion. Calcination, dissolution, purification: each stage of the alchemical process is a stage of interior clearing.

Jung called this individuation, the gradual removal of the projections, defenses, and false identities that prevent the Self from being known. The ego’s resistance to this process is precisely its attachment to its own constructions. It would rather be full of itself than empty enough to receive something larger.

The elixir of Truth is not a reward granted from outside. It fills the space that becomes available when the heart stops being occupied by fear, performance, and noise.

Openness is not passivity. It is the most demanding spiritual act there is.
