POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Last year, I was diagnosed with MS that spread rapidly over a few months. My hands, my energy, my spirit — they all needed time to rest and heal. Coming back to braiding feels like remembering who I am again. One client at a time ✨

It’s been a tough year to put it lightly. Watching back this reel I get emotional but also slightly angry because it doesn’t even show a fraction of how it’s been BTS. Missing out on so many business opportunities due to my health and just not knowing how my vision or muscles would be on the day as it takes over my whole body! Whilst sitting and watching it all from my phone has been HARD but with God nothing that is for me shall ever pass and that has kept me above water.

MS started in my left eye and within a few months spread across my face including throat & jaw. The daily fatigue that can be so severe at times I am literally paralysed to my bed and cannot feel my legs. The excessive weight gain due to my muscles constantly failing me making simple walking an impossible task. That’s without the brain fog!! I can barely concentrate to construct an email let alone update a website! It’s been a real struggle mentally and physically although I’ve found moments throughout to still enjoy and travel!! I am finally ready to return, it’s just different now ✨

Thank you to everyone who has checked in, been there where they can and just still supported without making me feel guilty or ashamed.

Protective styles for natural hair is more than just looking good. There is so much information out there now that it can be easy for clients to feel overwhelmed or deflated when trying to pick their braider.

My best advice would be ti book a consultation with a few braiders first before booking to be able to decide what and who is best for you and your hair care needs ✨ by @silonesensei_

Edges have become an obsession over the last few years and I feel many of us haven’t taken a second to understand what exactly the purpose of edges are besides to be styled…

Your edges are essential for safeguarding the follicles and skin. Did you know your edges are also there to help with sweat management?

Once we understand it’s importance and how fragile it is we can start looking at the way we currently over manipulate them and understand how this can contribute to breakage.

4 main reasons for edges breaking:
✨ Using alcohol based edge controls / heavy amounts of gel on to edges without a barrier can block these follicles making it easier to cause buildup , dehydration, irritation and breakage.

✨ Edges have less protein making them finer than the rest of your hair so high tension styles can caused these hairs to snap. Loosening your ponytail or doing more lower bun styles can take the strain off.

✨ Excessive manipulation is the KEY cause of edges breaking. The constant styling, hard brushing and swooping causes physical damage and can cause traction breakage. I always try to encourage my clients that your hair is still done without the edges slicked down.

✨ Lack of proper removal is something we have all been guilty of. Removing any gel / product daily will help preserve your edges and also give your edges a break where you can.

By making at least 1 change can help preserve your edges if you feel too overwhelmed to stop all 4. The goal here to inform and encourage ❤️

I’ve been quiet but not because I’ve stopped braiding..

For the past 11 years braiding has been more than just hair for me. It’s been my income, my creativity, my outlet and my way of connecting with so many of you ✨

But behind the styles there has also been real life…

Living with MS.
Being a single mum.
Raising a toddler with autism, cerebral palsy & other additional needs.
Mental health
And navigating all of that plus so much more while still trying to show up at 100% every time…

So I’m not starting over… I’m showing up more honestly whether that be 50% or 40% and not aim for 100% each time as that isn’t being honest ✨

On this page you’ll still get:
✨ Protective styles
✨ Natural hair care tips
✨ Braiding knowledge
✨ Hair trends

But you’ll also see:
✨ The reality behind the work
✨ Motherhood in its raw form
✨ How I balance it all (the good days & the hard ones)

This is a space for hair, but also for truth…

If you’ve been here, thank you.
If you’re new, you’re welcome. Let’s grow in every way ✨ taken in London, United Kingdom by @silonesensei_

I’ve really enjoyed French curls at the moment. The fact you can have bouncy curls and LIGHTWEIGHT 😍

My client chose standard boxes as we didn’t want to go too small so we definitely created the volume with the curls ✨

This is a style I’ve done for years but we just never had a name for it back then.

I am someone who is very tender headed and with MS too much weight can set my eyes off so this is a go to style for me that allows me to still achieve full, long hairstyles without the weight!

This style is usual installed with miracle knots hair which has individual crochet pieces connected to it which sounds great but can very tedious trying to install yourself and more expensive per bundle.

So, instead!!!! I just use normal boho hair and braid it into my natural hair and leave pieces out as I go along. It’s easier, quicker and more cost effective. Making the take down time even easier!

Use this method if you want to cut down the time OR book this style online ✨

I take notes after every single appointment including consultations ✨

My clients always mention how intentional I am to them and just how much I remember about how THEY like their appointment and this is how ✨

I remember how my clients like their tea/coffee, I know how my clients who are SEN prefer the lighting, temperature and even which toys to include in their sensory box on the day

Nothing done here is last minute or not done with intention. We may not be viral or have a salon but everything is still done with love and intention ✨

March is autoimmune disease awareness month and as this is something that has forced me to make significant adaptations to my life so I wanted to share more awareness ✨

✨ Schedule / work hours
I used to work 6-7 days a week, 1-3 clients a day all whilst acing gym, meal prep and motherhood to now only being able to manage working 3 days a week if that and one a day.

✨ Weakness
My muscles ache often throughout the day making braiding sometimes difficult. At first I tried to ‘push through’ but that quickly showed me how that method will push me to my limit. So now I only offer specific hairstyles.

✨ Blurred vision / lack of coordination
My sight was the first thing to go with MS and took weeks to get back. My sight still goes blurry multiple times a day. Now I close my eyes for 20 seconds where I can to give my eyes a break.

✨ Brain fog
Memory loss and brain fog are big side effects to having MS! I could completely forget what I am saying during a conversation but luckily I have very understanding clients that remind me or just laugh with me through it.

✨ Slurred speech/ jaw numbness
I used to be the braider who would talk in detail with all my clients but this has become an insecurity over the last year as when I am tired or muscles are weak I lose control of my jaw / face that makes my speech slurred or mixed up taking me longer to form sentences.

✨ Severe fatigue
I am fatigue 99% of the day every day and when fatigued it can cause inflammation making me walk with a waddle, loss balance often, extreme migraines and muscle pain especially lower back which can of course make braiding difficult hence why I don’t work long hours anymore.

✨ Temperature sensitivity
I’ve always hated the heat due to eczema but now!! If I have to work in a hot space my eyes instantly go blurry and jaw starts… #autoimmunedisease #myltiplesclerosisawareness by @silonesensei_
