This month, dive into fiction from pioneering French feminist author Hélène Cixous, newly translated by Sophie Lewis. Angst is available for pre-order now from the link in our bio 🕳️

In Angst, the creator of écriture féminine brings a unique voice to the page as a woman obsesses over her mother’s abandonment and her lover’s rejection. Sinking through textual disruptions, dreams and the rush of language, Hélène Cixous conveys powerful anguish and catharsis. This book also features a foreword by Jamieson Webster.

We’ll be holding a launch event at Foyles Charing Cross Road on 17th March. Link in bio 🔗 by @silver.press

Out today: MEMORY by Dorothea Lasky @dorothealasky

What constitutes personhood and consciousness? What memories get lost, and why? Dorothea Lasky’s MEMORY is a cycle of poet’s essays ranging across three dimensions of memory – ancestral, personal and poetic – to reflect on art; time, both everyday and the transcendent; charged sites of collective reminiscence, such as the moon landing; and forgetting through her father’s experience of Alzheimer’s.

Lasky broaches the edges of knowability: what’s left where memory is absent? What’s ‘real’ beyond the horizon of death? The book closes with ‘Time, the Rose, and the Moon’, an ars poetica exploring the ouroboros as a symbol for the nonlinear processes of time, memory and art. Lasky reveals memory to be huge and haunting, as she accumulates impressions that challenge the possibility of fixed meaning. by @silver.press

Catherine contributed to the book « Listening Glossery » with a short text on the concept of attentive listening. A book edited by Hannah Kemp-Welch and and published by Spiral House, a new imprint of Silver Press. @silver.press @spiralhouseeditions
@soundarthannah

« Listening Glossary explores the many meanings and practices of listening. In an era shaped by climate crisis, war and deepening social inequalities, listening is increasingly called upon to bear witness – to melting glaciers, disappearing species, militarised borders, extractive infrastructures and other forms of violence and loss.

This glossary is a practical guide to listening as a social, political and imaginative practice. It gathers over two hundred terms from art, ecology, activism, psychology, education and philosophy across nine decades of thinking about listening as a way of relating to others, environments and structures of power. Entries invite listening through another’s ears or from specific perspectives, encountering forms of listening that range from the non-cochlear to the interspecies. Together, these entries reveal listening as a critical method for understanding and transforming the worlds we inhabit. »

The book gathers extracts from historical texts alongside contemporary thinking, and includes texts by many authors and artists.

There is a sonic epicness to its composition... Less an individuated voice keening on a stage, and more like the total sound of torrential rain outside the window; each line, each clause, like a droplet hurtling towards earth amongst millions. ‘[E]ven if this poem is merely abbreviated water from a shared sky’, the speaker says in the first section, as though she can already sense the paucity of the poetic act in the face of grief.

We are saddened to learn of the death of Annie Dillard, a writer of striking lyricism and blazing clarity. Born in 1945 in Pittsburgh, Annie was the author of ten works, including the Pulitzer Prize-winning Pilgrim at Tinker Creek and the celebrated essay Total Eclipse, published as a Spiral House Portal in 2025.

In Total Eclipse, Annie turned a celestial event into a metaphysical reckoning, using a rupture in the familiar to confront mortality and the boundaries of time. Like the image of a lid closing over the last bright spot in the sky, her words endure.

‘We live half our waking lives and all of our sleeping lives in some private, useless and insensible waters we never mention or recall. Useless, I say. Valueless, I might add - until someone hauls their wealth up to the surface and into the wide-awake city, in a form that people can use.’

We are grateful to have published this extraordinary essay and to have had the opportunity to share Annie Dillard’s work with our readers. by @silver.press

Where did tarot come from and where can it take us? Beginning from Italo Calvino’s conception of the tarot as ‘a machine for constructing stories’, Mirror Tarot is a tool for play, divination and worldmaking.

The Portal traces the tarot across centuries of artistic, literary and intellectual history, while a sequence of microfictions and creative writing prompts accompany the Major Arcana of the artist’s deck.

SPOTLIGHT ON AUDRE LORDE 🌙

Audre Lorde described herself as a ‘Black, lesbian, feminist, socialist, mother, warrior, poet’ and was a co-founder of Kitchen Table Press, a publishing house for books by and about women of colour. Her extraordinary belief in the power of language – of speaking – to articulate selfhood, confront injustice and bring about change in the world remains as transformative today as it was then, and no less urgent

Lorde was the author of nine poetry collections and five books of prose. Her seminal works include the autobiographical novel Zami: A New Spelling of My Name and Sister Outsider, a collection of essays and speeches.

Your Silence Will Not Protect You, published by Silver Press, brings together her vital poetry and prose in one collection for the first time. by @silver.press
