Sustainable & colourful design and renovation for warm, hospitable homes.
New project: former gutter’s hut turned mid-century island home in Shetland

@shetlandjames made me a website so I can finally have all my projects in one place! I love it 😍 Sometimes, when you're in the thick of it, it doesn't feel like you're doing much at all, so it's nice to look back and realise how far you've come! #interiordesign #projectmanagement #design #glasgowwestend by @silverdarlinghouse

Keeping this video made by @ali_watt_photographer for @rettiewestend on my grid for posterity - it just captures the flat so beautifully. I think I will re-watch this wistfully while I suffer through my first full Shetland winter later this year 😂

Really though, this flat has been my pride and joy, it's my best work to date as a designer and we have really loved living here. I would 11/10 move back to the Park area if/when we move back to Glasgow, but we'll see how coastal living goes for now!

Hallowe’en 2026 🎃 had an excellent time at our Hallowe’en party on Saturday, you know it’s a great party when you didn’t take a single picture after snapping one of the food at the start 🙃 thanks to Shirley and Ellie for snapping most of these! We were blown away by everyone’s creativity, from Liz’s Hedge Witch costume to Cal’s Garden Gnome, all the pictures the kids drew and coloured for decorations, Akshay’s homemade (and edible!) crystal meth for his Walter White costume and Tina’s gorgeous little crocheted pumpkin and delicious smores cookies! It also made us realise that we can fit at least 25 people in our house for a party even pre-reno which seems like a good incentive to get on with it and make the space work better. James dressed up as the Shetland-famous Daniel Gear and even made an app which scored everyone’s costume a solid “10 oota 10” - thankfully they all deserved it.

House updates from the week: the yellow light is finally here! It had a 6-week lead time that I didn’t notice, then took two weeks to ship, but it fits pretty perfectly (which is lucky for me, because there wasn’t a breakdown of the dimensions 🙃 - must be more diligent with future sourcing). The utility room has been walled off which is good except for the fact that the light switch is now behind the wall 😂 but that should be getting fixed this week. New double glazing for the sun room is on order, the flooring and worktop for the utility room have been ordered, and James Frames has built a new frame for my new Vinted purchase - so just got to get on with the party on Saturday then we can start taking the kitchen to bits! 😱

1-3. Some placeholder furniture - the plan is to jazz up the old post office shelves and have them as a dresser here with a fridge/freezer underneath (for our temporary utility room kitchen/outside in the summer). The interesting old objects are a ship’s telegraph which still rings and an old leather measuring tape (only does feet and inches)
4. My office pre-tidy
5-9. House plans, old and new (1951 extension onwards!)
10-12. We bought some shelves from Island Larder and now my office is a miracle of organisation (and I have a nice little “current projects” section, with the approximately 10 things I’m trying to do at once on it)
13-15. The sky last night around Clickimin on the walk home 😍
16-19. Some favourites from the JD Rattar exhibition for some Silver Darlings house inspo - the Dutchmen in their clogs are playing right into my Delft plate wall 😍

My new Substack is up today, after a 4-month break - it’s a nice long one with plenty of pictures, conveniently timed for your 10.30am tea break - you’re welcome ☺️

Updates on moving to Shetland, how the house is coming along (sort of) and why I’ve been too busy to write for ages. However, we’re getting into autumn now so I am anticipating plenty more indoor time for writing and renovating forthwith 🍂 by @silverdarlinghouse

August (and this is only half of it), I am ready for a rest now please 😅. Rising North festival, plastering walls (and a ceiling, owww), the Burra Eela, making charcoal at Gaada, getting in a last few sea swims before the weather turns. Busy month but nearly ready to hibernate now 😵‍💫

I finally made it to Bressay (the island we look out over) this morning for the first time to do the 5k Park Run with @shetland_social_runners - what a lovely time, even in spite of a little hangover from our outing last night. The roll with sausage and cheese at the Speldiburn Cafe afterwards was elite, as was getting to look in a charity shop in the same building. A wee sail home to pick up some bargain chairs from a church (£3 each) and now I think it might be time for a wee nap?!

Kicking off project Silver Darling with the sun room - a 70s time capsule in need of some serious (but mostly cosmetic) TLC ❤️‍🩹 (and yes I’m keeping the nice wooden frame… just not the fabulous fabric picture 🤷🏻‍♀️) #renovation #shetland #project #interiors #design by @silverdarlinghouse

On to the final leg of our Edinburgh/Berlin/Glasgow trip and it’s been a busy one! We had an amazing time at @liz.rex and Ryan’s wedding which we made by the skin of our teeth after getting fogged off, then had a day in Edinburgh wandering the Botanics and Calton Hill before a quick trip to the Scotsman cinema to see The Invite (much funnier than I anticipated). Berlin was incredible and it feels like we have a lot more exploring to do there, maybe a little Christmas market trip is in order (@vabalispa_official is a must-revisit even though it’s “textile-free” 😱). Loved the queer cabaret and a total lack of phone time for a back-to-the-90s vibe. Now staying with our old downstairs neighbours in Glasgow for a couple of days before we go back up the road and the real work begins 😙

Well, birthday week is drawing to a close and it’s been a banger. I’ve been to the hydrotherapy pool, Busta House for dinner, the @haar.sauna, the Croft House Museum for fiddle music, stories and skekklers, and finally tonight a tour of @withyburncrofttours and a private dining experience with @shetlandchef On top of that, I got lots of very thoughtful presents and made a cake that my colleagues got to enjoy (and seemed pretty surprised by - I gather birthday cakes are a bit of a novelty in a mostly-male office). What a week it’s been, and tomorrow we head to @liz.rex wedding and then to Berlin then back to Glasgow for a few days before we will finally be back on Shetland soil for a decent length of time at last 😅 Thank you to @shetlandjames for organising an amazing birthday - unlike Barbara Skelton, I will never need to write in my diary “My birthday. Insufficient fuss.” 😂
