How much time have you spent waiting?

Waiting for buses to arrive, people to return, situations to change. How many cigarettes have you lit whilst waiting, how many passerbys have you counted from your spot?

The hands of the clock do not stop turning; neither for the person you are awaiting to change, nor for the life you are awaiting to achieve.

One finds solace in waiting. This limbo of time, this purgatory where the inevitable seems so far away, and you can rest in the uncertainty of what is to come. Because there is no waiting in your fantasies; you have everything you want, right there, just a fleeting thought away.

But in the end, the time comes, and the waiting stops. You get on your bus, reach your stop, and come to the conclusion that the wait was better than the destination.

Σου έχει τύχει να περπατάς στο δρόμο, και να σου έρθει από το πουθενά ένα άρωμα που μυρίζει σαν ένα ξεχασμένο Αυγουστιάτικο απόγευμα στο σπίτι των παππούδων σου; Σου έχει τύχει να βγάζεις τα ακουστικά σου για να ακούσεις το θρόισμα των φύλλων, που είναι ίδιο με αυτό που έκανε το πλατάνι στην αυλή εκείνου του σπιτιού; Η γιαγιά σου καθάριζε βερίκοκο, ο παππούς σου έπινε έναν ελληνικό πριν φύγει για το καφενείο. Το βουητό της πόλης δεν σου ήταν ακόμη γνώριμο· κάθε απόγευμα ήταν μουσικά ντυμένο από τους ήχους των τζιτζίκων και των παιδικών φωνών που έκαναν αντίλαλο στη γειτονιά.

Ποιο ήταν το τελευταίο καλοκαίρι που πέρασες έτσι; Αν ήξερες ότι δε θα υπήρχε άλλο σαν αυτό, θα έκανες κάτι διαφορετικά; Ή πιστεύεις ότι η άγνοια του μέλλοντος είναι αυτή που σε έκανε να το απολαύσεις στο έπακρο;

Πλέον η γιαγιά σου δε σου καθαρίζει βερίκοκα, και ο καφές του παππού σου έχει κρυώσει. Τα χρόνια περάσανε, δεν είσαι παιδί πια. Η νοσταλγία όμως παραμένει, και μαζί με αυτή, η μυρωδιά εκείνου του καλοκαιριού.
