Just a snip snip🌿snippet of a documentary I am in about the Ex Asilo Filangeri.

The big historic building in the heart of Napoli has been occupied and run by the community known as @l_asilo dedicated to the production of arts and culture as a common good since 2012.

🐜One of the corners of the space that I have inhabited has been the garden.

🌿The tangle of plants describes quite well the joys and difficulties of being involved with such a community operating as a commons.

🗝️Like the garden, physically accessing the space can also be quite difficult despite the community being open.

During my time as an inhabitant and activist of L’Asilo (since 2022) I have been somewhat hands on and mainly involved in participatory processes like the assembly, organizational “tables”, various workshops, as well as organizing a week long SKILL CAMP (May 2024) funded by the same EU project as this documentary.

The documentary gives a good overview and view into this specific time and experience at L’Asilo.

Join 8-Ball Community for a screening of L’Asilo, Creating Space for Care, a documentary about the artist-run commons Ex Asilo Filangeri in Naples, a space that has spent years experimenting with collective governance, care, and cultural production.
Following the film, Silvia Lucia Cohn of L’Asilo joins 8-Ball co-founder Lele Saveri for a conversation exploring the parallels between these two volunteer-run communities and what it means to sustain shared cultural spaces today.
Whether you’re involved in artist-run spaces, interested in cooperative models, or simply curious about how communities organize themselves, this is an opportunity to reflect on the possibilities and challenges of the commons.
