In occasione del decimo anniversario del Lorenzo Borella Memorial Award, siamo profondamente orgogliosi e onorati di annunciare che il riconoscimento, a noi così caro, viene quest’anno assegnato alla studentessa belga Leena Vandorne.

Con la sua tesi intitolata “Understanding stakeholder perspectives on human-elephant conflict in the Greater Maasai Mara Ecosystem, Kenya, using Q-methodology” (Relatori: Jean HUGE e Susanne VOGEL, ULB / Open University of The Netherlands), ha ottenuto lo straordinario punteggio di 18,15 su 20!

Le nostre più sentite congratulazioni a LEENA per questo prestigioso risultato.

E, nello spirito del motto del nostro Lorenzo, le auguriamo:
“Good luck with your life. Life is good.”

On the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the Lorenzo Borella Memorial Award, we are deeply proud and honoured to announce that this recognition, so dear to us, is this year being awarded to Belgian student Lena Vandoorne.
For her thesis, entitled “Understanding stakeholder perspectives on human-elephant conflict in the Greater Maasai Mara Ecosystem, Kenya, using Q-methodology” (Supervisors: Jean HUGE and Susanne VOGEL, ULB / Open University of The Netherlands), she achieved the outstanding score of 18.15 out of 20!
Our heartfelt congratulations to LENA on this prestigious achievement.
And, in the spirit of Lorenzo’s motto, we wish her:

It is with the greatest pride and honor that we announce the conferment of the Lorenzo Borella Memorial Award 2025 to the Filipino student, JEANNY MAE MAGANA.
With her thesis entitled 'Intra- and interspecific variations in genome size of Corbicula freshwater clams' (Supervisors: Jean-François Flot, ULB/VUB, Belgium; Maria Celai Malay, University of the Philippines Diliman (UPD); and Dina Mae Rañises, ULB), she achieved an outstanding score of 19.10 out of 20!

Our heartfelt congratulations to JEANNY. And, in the spirit of our Lorenzo’s motto, we wish her: ‘Good luck with your life. Life is good’.

Siamo molto lieti ed onorati di annunciare che quest’anno il Lorenzo Borella Memorial Award è stato assegnato ad ANGELA BARRERO BELLO e SARA VROMAN.
E’ la prima volta che questo riconoscimento viene assegnato a ben 2 studentesse, rispettivamente provenienti dalla Colombia e dal Belgio.
Entrambe con le loro tesi interdisciplinari hanno ottenuto il punteggio di 18,79/20.
 
La tesi di ANGELA si intitola “Community-Based Mangrove Management (CBMM) in Sucre, Colombia: Stakeholder Perceptions, Land Cover Trends, and Challenges” (Relatori: Farid DAHDOUH-GUEBAS, ULB/VUB, Belgium; Alexandra RODRIGUEZ RODRIGUEZ, Deakin University, Australia; Juan Felipe BLANCO LIBREROS & José Marín RIASCOS VALLEJOS, Universidad de Antioquia, Colombia; Jaime POLANÍA, Universidad Nacional del Colombia, Colombia; Jean HUGE, Open University of the Netherlands).
La tesi tratta di problemi socio-ecologici, e si è sviluppata grazie a interviste con abitanti locali.
E’ la prima volta che si aggiudica questo riconoscimento una tesi fatta in Colombia.
 
La tesi di SARA si intitola “CSI Chocolate: combining molecular tools and field observations to identify the cryptic pollinators of cacao” (Relatori: Bram VANSCHOENWINKEL & Eliza VAN DE SANDE, VUB, Belgium; Jamila Mohd Salim SALIM & Nor Zalipah MOHAMED, University Malaysia Terrenganu, Malaysia).
E’ la prima tesi vincente che tratta di cioccolato.
 
Le nostre più sentite congratulazioni, quindi, ad ANGELA e SARA!
Ed utilizzando il motto che il nostro Lorenzo usava dire: “Good luck with your life. Life is good” (“Buona fortuna. La vita è bella”)

We are very pleased and honoured to announce that this year’s Lorenzo Borella Memorial Award went to ANGELA BARRERA BELLO and SARA VROMAN.
This is the first time that this recognition has been awarded to 2 students, who respectively come from Colombia and Belgium.
Both their inter-disciplinary thesis got 18,79/20.
 
ANGELA’s thesis is entitled “Community-Based Mangrove Management (CBMM) in Sucre, Colombia: Stakeholder Perceptions, Land Cover Trends, and Challenges” (Supervisors: Farid DAHDOUH-GUEBAS, ULB/VUB, Belgium; Alexandra RODRIGUEZ RODRIGUEZ, Deakin University, Australia; Juan Felipe BLANCO LIBREROS & José Marín RIASCOS VALLEJOS, Universidad de Antioquia, Colombia; Jaime POLANÍA, Universidad Nacional del Colombia, Colombia; Jean HUGE, Open University of the Netherlands).
It deals with socio-ecological problem, based on interview with local inhabitants.
It is a first time that a Colombian thesis has won this award.
 
SARA’s thesis is entitled “CSI Chocolate: combining molecular tools and field observations to identify the cryptic pollinators of cacao” (Supervisors: Bram VANSCHOENWINKEL & Eliza VAN DE SANDE, VUB, Belgium; Jamila Mohd Salim SALIM & Nor Zalipah MOHAMED, University Malaysia Terrenganu, Malaysia).
It is the first winning thesis to deal with cocoa.
