Not even wrong in the right way.
"The Gravity of Hope" Out now!

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Like a lot of my lyrics when I started writing this verse it was about one thing and then morphed into another. It started kind of pointed at someone I felt had done something thoughtless. But whenever I start criticizing others I have a knee jerk reaction that makes me reflect on myself.

"This track is always on a loop" is kind of a music joke while reflecting how we repeat the same patterns over and over again. It often seems like no matter what we do to change ourselves we find ourselves repeating certain behaviors. It takes monumental shifts in consciousness to shake ourselves out of the loop.

There are also two call backs to songs on my last album Everything Matters. The "track is on a loop" is reminiscent of "we're all screeching around that racetrack bend, survival's become such a chore" from "Sinners" and the line "these Alibis are wearing thin" calls back to the song "Alibis."

Honestly, I hate being this matter for fact and deliberate in telling the world directly about these things but I am told that long captions help the algorithm. 🤣 Are you still reading? Go outside and breathe fresh air. ✌️

Imitating the inimitable @drichardbailey … not playing along to anything in the headphones. No click. Just me and drums. Vibing. That said I’ll Venmo you a dollar if you know what song I’m thinking of. 2 OHs (ribbons), crotch mic and front of kick. Very stoked on these tones. Set up an old premier snare I got for $50 and did the floppy lug thing. I love it. Going deep down the drum nerd rabbit hole again these days.

Spent the last two days making some wonderful sounds for Ars Scuzza: @kjmetzgertar and @scale_snail experimental reimagining of music from the Ars Nova, Ars Subtilior, and Ars Antiqua periods.
This was one of those sessions that reminds me how much I love making records with other people. A room full of instruments, percussion everywhere, great players throwing ideas back and forth, and plenty of permission to experiment.
There’s something particularly fun about getting multiple drummers in the same room. Get a few of us together and there’s basically zero chance of under-arranging anything. 😂
But seriously, collaborating with other drummers is one of my favorite things. Different instincts, different sounds, everyone listening and reacting to each other. At a certain point, the percussion starts to feel like its own little orchestra.
Also loved hearing @shorelinegoldsounds working his sonic magic around everything we were tracking. The whole thing kept expanding into something stranger and cooler as the weekend went on.
Really grateful Kevin brought me into this one. Inspiring music, just the right amount of percussion, excellent humans, and two very fun days in the studio.
Can’t wait to hear where this record ends up. #acmeaustin #experimentalmusic #austinmusic #studiorecording #drummers

A completely reasonable amount of percussion

Paper and felt. I love owning a piano. Even a modest one like this. Music is fun.

Demoing something. Minimal mic drum sound, ribbons, lots of stuff on em.

I’ve been a little nervous to start writing again. I’ve done a bit since releasing the album but I need to get going full force.

It’s scary starting new music. Just gotta dive in and focus on finding stuff that feels good.

This piano part and the little drum machine thing started this off. Kind of thinking krautrok meets ambient piano.

Let me know what you think.

The practice of learning an instrument, of writing songs or improvising is an incredible thing. If you strive to do even the simplest things as beautifully as you can, you will forget all about progressing because you'll lose yourself in the process. Go make something for no one. Or give it to God as they say. This is why I say it's a spiritual practice. The reward is inherent in the process when done the right way. I'm far from the first person to say this. Trying to find a fresh way to say it. ✌️
