Meet the finalists of the 2026 Woollahra Small Sculpture Prize ahead of the exhibition at Woollahra Gallery at Redleaf this spring.

One of our 49 finalists is Simon Chalmers with his sculpture, National Theatre Skip, London.

Working with archival photographic paper, card and wood, Chalmers transforms photographs of objects and structures encountered in the everyday environment into carefully constructed sculptural forms. By removing the subject from its surroundings, he leaves traces of the original setting embedded within the work.

In National Theatre Skip, London, details such as shadows, reflected light, weathering and traces of the surrounding architecture remain visible. These fragments preserve a sense of place, even as the original context has been stripped away, creating a work that sits between photograph, object, and memory.

Chalmers’ practice brings together his background in fine art, fresco painting, and set design. After studying at Chelsea School of Art and the Il Laboratorio per Affresco di Vainella in Italy, he went on to design exhibition projects in Genoa and Rimini before working as a set designer in London on projects commissioned by Paul Smith, the BBC, Channel 4 and MTV.

His work has been exhibited in the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, Works on Paper at Green & Stone, Soho Open, ING Discerning Eye, and previously in the Woollahra Small Sculpture Prize.

See National Theatre Skip, London in the 2026 Woollahra Small Sculpture Prize exhibition from 2 October–29 November 2026.
