I reviewed two albums for the latest issue of The Wire magazine, 'Refractions', the new set from Cornelius, and a fascinating compilation called 'Japanese New Wave On Dub 1980 – 1985' that looks at the influence of dub on the Japanese post-punk movement.

The Wire is in store and online now, and the magazine comes with 'Wire Tapper 72', a free various artists album either on CD or available to download for subscribers. Enjoy. by @simon_coates

As Somerset House Studios celebrates its tenth year in existence, I spoke to Marie McPartlin, the organisation's director from the start, for the New York Observer.

We covered the state of the London arts scene, how the Studios keep going, the importance of experimentation and more. Read it via the link in bio.

"Tarek Atoui’s commission is a first for the Turbine Hall series. Whilst the likes of Bruce Nauman, Philippe Parreno and Cecilia Vicuña have created Turbine Hall artworks that incorporated sound in one way or another, the compositions used to flavour their commissions were often made by collaborators, and worked as add-ons to their central pieces. Atoui’s artistic output is centred entirely around sound"

Ahead of Tarek Atoui's new Turbine Hall commission for London's Tate Modern gallery, I wrote about the remarkable artist for the Hyper Culture site. Link in bio.

Finally, we made it to The Music Is Black exhibition at London’s V&A East. This is a vital survey explaining the fight from slavery and exploitation and the foundational impact of Black music in the UK. Impossible to include the sheer breadth of the show here. Just go.

photos explained:

- Winifred Atwell’s piano
- pre-amp built by the Metro Sound System
- record box used by the Sir Coxsone Sound System
- sign from the legendary Four Aces club in Dalston
- Dizzee Rascal second album promo poster
- iconic stage gear worn by Poly Styrene of X-Ray Spex
- the Banksy-designed stab vest that Stormzy wore for his Glastonbury headlining appearance in 2019
- portrait of the irreplaceable Benjamin Zephaniah

There’s even a cover of a TOUCH magazine edition that featured my monthly reggae column inside. If that’s not reason enough to visit, I don’t know what is...

For the latest issue of The Wire magazine, I’ve reviewed Locust’s new album ‘Spectral+’ and the 'venerations for the sacred action’ compilation from the remarkable South London label and collective, life is beautiful. The online issue of the magazine is available now, while the print version will be in stores next week due to a printing delay.

Incidentally, this month’s cover star is Mike Watt, legendary Minutemen, fIREHOSE and Iggy Pop and The Stooges bassist, who interviewed my comrade in arms @nigacd a while ago for his The Watt From Pedro podcast...

OUT NOW: the Ubu Kung ‘Greatest Hits’ album brings together twelve tracks I produced under the pseudonym from 2016 until last year. The tracks previously existed as soundtracks to Ubu Kung short films, as projects for sound art and experimental music festivals or as standalone tracks for international compilation albums.

For example, ‘Touchstone No.1’ is the soundtrack to the 2019 Ubu Kung short film of the same name that’s been screened in Milwaukee, Philadelphia, Thessaloniki, at Coventry Cathedral and elsewhere.

Six of the tracks feature vocals from the inspirational and frustrating X, and this is the first time they’ve all been gathered together.

Ubu Kung started life as Visqueen, an offshoot project of Tse Tse Fly Middle East, the experimental arts platform and collective we founded in Dubai in 2015. Visqueen also featured X on vocals, and our tracks were played by the late, great Andrew Weatherall on his NTS Radio programme and on radio stations worldwide.

Ubu Kung ‘Greatest Hits’ is available to stream/buy on Bandcamp via the link in bio.

"Many of the works gathered here were banned, censored or contested precisely because they challenged established ideas. Bringing them together is not only an act of preservation, it’s an affirmation of the enduring importance of intellectual freedom and the circulation of ideas” - Francisca Pedro Pinto.

Very cool to have worked on the word-spreading for The Manifesto Library, just opened by Dua Lipa and the Service95 Book Club in Porto, Portugal. I spoke with the library's Francisca Pedro Pinto, CEO of Index on Censorship, Jemimah Steinfeld, and Kasey Meehan of PEN America for the Service95 newsletter and website article (link in bio). As Margaret Atwood points out, The Manifesto Library is set to preserve books like 'The Handmaid's Tale', protecting them from censorship and making them freely available to all.
