@rj_ellory 's The House of Falling Light may well be one of his most emotionally resonant novels yet. It is a story that begins with tragedy but steadily evolves into something much richer: a meditation on survival, redemption, and the quiet strength required to keep moving forward when life seems determined to break you. All of this is set against the backdrop of rural America in the 1950s, spanning several years and unfolding into an epic yet unconventional manhunt.

At its heart are two unforgettable characters whose journeys unfold largely apart, yet remain deeply connected. Teenage Eleanor Clewson and Texas Ranger Roy Haskell inhabit different worlds and face different battles, yet they are unmistakably kindred spirits. They are the yin and the yang of the novel, each searching, in their own way, for something that seems increasingly elusive in a fractured world: humanity.

One of Ellory's greatest strengths has always been his characters, and it is once again evident here. Eleanor's journey is both physically and emotionally epic. Her resilience, determination, and the forced path towards maturity make her a compelling protagonist. Roy's quest is equally absorbing. Beneath his professionalism lies a man wrestling with his own questions of justice, morality, and purpose. Watching both characters persevere through their hardships becomes the emotional engine of the novel.

What also makes The House of Falling Light such a compelling read is the way it explores what it truly means to endure. Both Eleanor and Roy are forced to confront not only external dangers but also their own inner demons. Ellory suggests that determination, perseverance, and an unwavering drive towards resolution are the only real paths to healing. Catharsis cannot be found by standing still; it must be earned through struggle...

Random bit of celebrity author self-recognition wandering the streets of London tonight. Stumbled on a copy of Out of Bounds at a bookstore. Total surprise! Put a satisfied smile on my face. Told the staff about it. They initially went WOW but then asked what my name is and the wow factor near immediately disappeared 😁 by @simon_duke_author

It’s remarkable how fast time moves. This January marks 10 years since the publication of my second novel, The Perfectionist. I still find it hard to believe a decade has already passed.

This psychological crime thriller, about an elusive serial killer and a journalist fighting to uncover the truth, received generous praise from reviewers when it first launched, and I’m deeply grateful for that support.

To celebrate the anniversary, I crafted a commemorative video that blends the original trailer I produced 10 years ago with selected quotes from the book, new imagery, and new music. Revisiting the project reminded me of how creatively challenging, demanding, and rewarding it was.

For anyone unfamiliar with the story, here is the original back cover blurb:

“Iowa, 1988. An unidentified severed head is found rotting in a corn field. Confronted with this gruesome discovery, Gerry Stokes – an arrogant and obnoxious newspaper reporter – agrees to cover up the affair. But the truth can't be concealed forever.

More than twenty years later, Stokes must finally atone for his errors as the past returns with a vengeance. Forced into an investigation to discover what happened all those years ago, he stumbles upon a sordid truth: the victim is one of many; people seemingly chosen at random across America by a serial killer at large for more than two decades; a killer with a unique and horrific modus operandi who’s flown under the radar. Still at large the killer seeks to achieve artistic perfection in his methods of execution. He is "The Perfectionist".

While tracking the killer under the cloak of FBI suspicion, Stokes sets himself an ambitious target and potential path to fame: write a book that leads the police to the killer, a first in the history of publishing.

The stakes are high, and the pressure is on. Stokes is in the race of his life to discover The Perfectionist's identity and publish his bestseller, while forced to bend the notion of what is ethically right.”
