Caladenia falcata growing in dry Wandoo woodland near Mt Trio, Stirling Range, on Menang-Goreng country, Western Australia. Like most Australian terrestrial orchids, these plants are both unbelievably tough, inhabiting hot, dry, bushfire-prone conditions in extremely poor, ancient sand and gravel, and unbelievably fragile, completely unable to survive when the environment to which they are so closely adapted is altered in any way.

Tiny Caladenia cairnsiana looks striking up close, but is difficult to spot in the dry Wandoo woodland (see tbors pic). The fourth pic shows its natural hybrid with the previous species, known as the prisoner orchid (C. x erickaoniae).

Western Australia’s iconic wreath flowers are off the leash this year! I have never seen so many before. A continuous mat of them, so dense that you could hardly make out their wreath-like form, stretching as far as the eye could see in places. What a privilege to see them.
