Lunges are a staple exercise which can be done with completely different techniques to suit different goals.

💪🏼The strength training lunge focuses on the glutes and quads of the front leg, contracting as we press through the front foot to lift back to the starting position. Multiple sets of 8-15 reps work well.

🧑‍🩰The flexibility training lunge focuses on lengthening the hip flexors and quads of the back leg, increasing the distance between the muscle attachment points (the hip and knee of the back leg). The glute max of the back leg is contracting for full hip extension and protection of the lower back. Repeated long holds of 30-120 sec are effective.

💃The mobility training lunge is all about freeing up the available movement of the hip joint. The focus is on rotating the hip between front lunges and side lunges while maintaining some glute contraction/ hip extension, at the widest range of motion available. This makes a big difference in the body’s ability to move fluidly between shapes when dancing.

RIP @jamilla 🕊️❤️
Thank you for teaching us the art of pole, especially the beautiful #pdjadesplit 🙏🏼

Jamilla brought her dance and aerial art training to the strip club and helped take pole dancing to the next level. She was the first ever Miss Pole Dance Australia. She created The Art of Pole DVD lessons and went on to succeed as a professional performer and athlete.

She was a pioneer and the creator of the foundational pole move #pdjamilla

I had no idea in 2011 that I was learning from a true pole icon.
Grateful 🙏🏼 by @simonaroyal

Revised as suggested by someone on the original post.
For extra context: I have a deep awareness of the vulnerability of very young girls who are s3xualised by older men.

I was only 16 when I first worked in a club. As you can imagine, I had already experienced early s3xualisation by predatory men leading up to that point. Not only that, but predatory media messaging too (hello, Hollywood?).
We still live in a world where patriarchal religions and their idealisation of female virginity lead to a p3dophilic culture, where government protection of vulnerable kids is weak, and where sadly, there is money being made by entertaining harmful fantasies and normalising things that should never be tolerated.
On top of that, I have seen young dancers being reprimanded for men’s disrespectful behaviour as if older dancers forgot that it takes time to learn how to handle their boundary-pushing behaviour.
I would love to see people stop defending costumes that scream p3dophilia. 🙏🏼 by @simonaroyal

(See next REVISED post for more context) We need to have more nuanced conversations about the impact we have as individuals in this industry. Yes, there is unfair stigma *and* there are ways we can do better. Thoughts? What would you add? by @simonaroyal

Part 2: Ayesha

Nobody seems to know the human behind this name but it’s safe to say that she was a $krippa.

Imagine coming up with moves from pure trial & error without access to endless coaching, inspiration and information about this type of movement — and it was never just about flow and body waves. It was always about the combination of strength, flexibility, flow and sensuality. Always has been art, always has been athletic.

People might think some of the OG moves are “basic” now, but remember that the large majority of the population can’t do this stuff. by @simonaroyal

This is a homage to the ROOTS which can NEVER be taken away, no matter where the pole industry goes.
The music, the neon under UV lights, the heels, the movement and the tricks come STRAIGHT from the strip club.

The old-school tricks shown here — Jade, Allegra, Jamilla — were all created by OG pole dancing strippers. The world is lucky and blessed to have been given access to these resilient and talented women’s ART.

Pay your respects and don’t you dare spread LIES about the origins of pole dancing, or make belittling statements to attempt to shield yourself from the stigma and prejudice.
If you want the art, you gotta stand with the people it came from — the MOTHERS.
