Memories of dancing the role of The Chosen One in Maurice Bèjart’s powerful The Rite of Spring.
The divine @emma_sandall_dance just reminded me with her own post showing her as the female lead.
Some roles danced stay in our hearts and dna as unforgettable and embodied. Huge gratitude for having dived deeply into this one. by @simondowdance

I am currently fortunate to have a collaborative installation, ‘Traces’, as part of the @castlemainefestival which is celebrating its 50th anniversary. In working with Tim Dargaville, composer and musician, and bringing both still and moving images together in three twenty minute films, we have taken over the old 1800’s stables building generously offered by @cantwellpropertycastlemaine on Barker and Templeton streets in Castlemaine.
The darkened and evocative space is perfect for this project in this iteration and we are so pleased to be included, thank you to Linda Sproul and Martin Paten.
Open from 11-4 every day through Sunday March 29.
Please do offer feedback if you’re able to make it.

Principal Artist of @ausballet Callum Linnane, as captured by @simondowphotographer and chosen as a finalist in the Martin Kantor Photographic Portrait Prize 2025 as part of the brilliant, not to be missed @ballaratfoto
Callum generously gave his time (and soul) for this shoot and we dived deep into laughter and a level of human sharing that is always breathtaking when you come across it. Thank you to Callum for being and such gratitude to the panel for including my work alongside creative and thoughtful artists. Callum was once my student at @theaustralianballetschool so very special to witness his growth and passion as a true artist.
Please do visit @ballaratfoto and I so look forward to seeing this portrait amongst the remarkable finalists. by @simondowdance

Well it’s almost here… I am thrilled to have been asked to be a speaker at the TedX Castlemaine three day event this weekend. I am speaking at @theatreroyalcastlemaine on Friday evening at 7pm alongside great creative humans. Tickets are through the @tedxcastlemaineofficial website. My topic is:
‘No Rules Creativity: Is creativity a doing or a way of being?’

Life is always surprising… anything could happen and I don’t have anything to wear!

Life continues to surprise and bring wonders. Having been invited to join @theaustralianballetschool for their 60th anniversary celebrations with an appearance in the iconic Graeme Murphy’s choreographic interpretation of Winter in Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons with the beautiful young dancers of the graduating class, I found myself this weekend in Sydney. The alumni event honouring those who have experienced the school from the inside was wonderful and to my surprise on several tables was an image of yours truly at 16 with the beautiful Roslyn Watson from my year level who was the very first indigenous student at the school. I had the privilege to say a few words on this occasion and was thrilled to be able in some very small way to celebrate and to thank Lisa Pavane who has directed the school over the last 10 years and who has left a significant legacy. Lisa will step away from her role in the coming weeks and on to another life phase. We indeed seem to reimagine and reset at points in our lives and what a joy to contemplate and to embrace total newness.
Returning to the Sydney Opera House is always special and having been in the first season of @ausballet Sleeping Beauty as a graduate a week out of the school it has figured in my life through many phases. Perhaps more to come… or not. It’s up to life.
The absolute joy of spending this time with Graeme Murphy, Janet Vernon, dear friends at the school and amongst the youthful, gifted and wide-eyed great young humans has been such a superb gift. To see work by @lucasjervies @paulknobloch @serenagrahamm @boyaciareti and Kevin Jackson and to see @akokondo and @chengwuguoballet dance with such freedom and maturity was humbling.
Thank you @lisapavane and everyone at @theaustralianballetschool and @sydneyoperahouse for making me feel so welcome. Looking forward to more performances soon at @artscentremelbourne
What’s next… something that’s for sure.

I have always been fascinated and curious about all forms of movement, communication, theatre and performance art so the Japanese form of butoh has been a deep dive into the self over a few decades now resulting in solo performances in varied international venues and locations. I am now beginning to return to and rediscover this form and its hybrid potentials as I begin to research and work through making new solo work and new discoveries. Thankfully I now know less than I ever have done which leaves one free to be innocent and present. I look forward to sharing when (and perhaps if) this becomes a ‘something’ from the ‘nothing’.

To all my dance friends who may not know me as a photographer @simondowphotographer
I am fortunate enough to be a finalist in the prestigious Martin Kantor Photographic Portrait Prize as part of the fantastic @ballaratfoto International Ballarat Foto Biennale. You can vote this week for your chosen portrait using their website ( 1st image ). My entry is a contemplative portrait titled ‘no self’.
I have been so honoured to have been considered for this prize among the 19 other artists. Good luck to all and it has been a joy to be in your creative company.
Don’t miss the Biennale with only two weeks remaining! It is remarkable. by @simondowdance
