Detail of “Figure/s ii.” Onyx and pipestone. Stone begins where language fails. Not failure in a negative sense, but as an opening. A threshold between material presence and linguistic absence. by @simonekearneystudio

Notes from the studio (# 3), alabaster, wood, silk. There is a voice which hovers as air. There is a chasm in the word “voice”: V. There is also a void there: O. And a thin wall: I. An edge that performs itself in being uttered in the mouth, that bends, and then is jettisoned into the image of a comb with two missing teeth: C E. A broken circle that straightens and finds its symmetry in threes. Tongue tip against palate, just before hitting the back of the teeth, stop short, refrain. Tip of the tongue lightly taps the roof of the mouth. Line a wave to a low harbor wall, or as if a sea were beneath a soft but solid ceiling - a momentary cave. by @simonekearneystudio

Notes from the studio (# 2), “Telephone,” alabaster, graphite, grease marker (detail). “In a slow sort of way she moved into the middle of the room so that she could feel in the middle of something, so that she could poke the middle of something with herself, but she did so as though she were someone else, she felt so happy and she kept her happiness to herself in the room that was full with a lettuce light. “I am the whole of the lettuce. I am the whole lettuce,” she said, as if she were talking casting a spell on herself into cosmic union.

A voice who or I mean a voice which does not feel to be mine but neither is it yours, whose is the voice, is the voice mine, is the voice a second skin? Is the voice a mask? Does it protect me from the cold, does it protect me from outside influences? Or is this a voice that never lifts off the ground, half-swallows itself, insulated, secondary, almost a wall of so so soft so soft I fall into it but there is no way in, is there?” by @simonekearneystudio

I loved getting to write a poem about my favorite letter in the alphabet - the one and only “O” - as part of Carol Szymanski and Barry Schwabsky’s “Emergency Eyewash ABC: A Poet’s Abecadarium” book, beautifully printed with Carol Szymanski’s font, alongside so many great writers I admire so much. @cockshutdummy @mr_tranquil_tranquil_waters by @simonekearneystudio

I’m excited to share a new video piece as part of VISION LAB: LABORATORY OF BELONGING at Harvard this weekend.

The video I’ll be presenting pairs visuals of my sculptures alongside text. The piece re-imagines stone beyond physical substance—treating it as a threshold figure and a carrier of time, memory, opacity, and untranslatable presence. Viewers are invited into a contemplative visual pace, engaging with sculpted forms that resist direct explanation while asking to be listened for and attended to.
The work centers on the intersection of landscape, stone, and the indescribable. Through text fragments paired with visual footage, the video weaves connections between body and stone, inner and outer states, speech and silence, appearance and absence. It serves as a kind of precursor for a larger project that @graciasgreis and I are currently working on.

Sunday, September 20th at 3pm- Rain or shine ✨ 🌧️ Just in time for the equinox, ISPC will be hosting alumni Simone Kearney @simonekearneystudio & Bianca Stone @biancastone for a poetry reading in the meadow! Cofounder @artist.cjensen will contribute as well. Due to the private nature of artist retreat, we rarely have public events at ISPC! But thrilled to make a little exception… 🍂 🌾 🎵

Come enjoy a wander to each of the sculptural additions to the meadow from our 2026 sculpture fellows, read poems together, and enjoy light refreshments in this liminal time of year between summer and fall.

Plan to wear walking shoes, bring a poem or song to share, and carpool if you can (we have limited parking on site!). More details will be forthcoming.

Please RSVP to hello@insitupolyculture.org for directions and to confirm attendance. by @simonekearneystudio

I put down my rocks to go look at some rocks and touch the glaciers in the bugaboos of British Columbia - a world of reddish snow and aqua lakes and mountains that look like shifting prisms, refracting facets of their own unfolding, granites like gems whose splits and cracks make a pattern so intricate it starts to move in front of your eyes in the light, alive, somewhere between monster and angel, breathing a granite weave. Ice that is bright blue and fissured where it stretched and broke and opened. To be cut up by its majesty and its melting. To stumble onto little strange geometries of moss and lime lichen explosions on rock that form at the base of peaks, where the sun pools in the cold. by @simonekearneystudio
