Opened First Person (Hard-Boiled) exactly one year ago at 24 Tawariki Street. An immense experience with much learning and fulfilling kōrero with a huge range of visitors over the course of 6 weeks. I miss my bird friends and the ever-present presence of the wai flowing under and over the site. Ngā mihi nui to the phenomenal team that helped bring it life @viv__teo @ralphxbrown @extendedwhanau @toakiokano and a heap of other talented folks.

Appreciate the post-show kupu from @samueltekani appearing in last summers Metro reboot: “These beings (sculptures, golems) are difficult to describe—think Greco-Roman mausoleum reliefs in the style of Damon Albarn’s Gorillaz. Like the walls around them, they are shinier for being fleeting (doomed), their fates bound to the makeshift temple they’ve manifested in, appearing as if called or conjured by the tolling of a bell only they can hear.”

July 10, This 29th and final gentle announcement lands serendipitously on this young but increasingly significant holiday for us all in Aotearoa. Matariki Hunga Nui translates to ‘Matariki has many people’ or ‘Matariki, the gatherer of people’ and highlights the star cluster’s significance in bringing community and whānau together. Def what we need right now.

Massive props to @professormatamua for being the humble champion of Matariki and Mātauranga Māori and for all of those breathing life into it today. Ngā mihi ki a koutou.

Whakatauki sourced from ‘Matariki: The Star of the Year’, Dr. Rangi Matamua (Tūhoe), Huia Publishing, 2017.

On July 8, 2026, the moon enters the Third (Last) Quarter phase at exactly 7:29 am (New Zealand Standard Time). In the traditional Māori lunar calendar, this waning phase spans the nights known as Tangaroa ā-mua and Tangaroa ā-roto. The guidance for this time sourced from Ngā Hina Maramataka 2026/27, @tewananga: ‘Tangaroa brings a productive phase. How it begins will confirm how the rest of this time will flow.’

July 07, Vaimaila Urale, Upega, 2026, Digital Print

@vaimailaurale is a Tāmaki Makaurau-based artist. Born in Sāmoa, much of her art making process draws on traditional Sāmoan elements expressed through digital media and contemporary social art practices.

Referencing early computer image making known as ASCII, Urale explores digital mark making utilising universal computer keyboard characters / \ backslash and forward slash, as well as mathematical symbols < > less-than and greater-than. Using this process, she’s designed tattoos, screen prints, ceramics as well as a large scale public murals. By merging digital language with customary symbols, she navigates the tensions and connections between contemporary systems and ancestral storytelling.

The New Net Goes Fishing by Witi Ihimaera was one of her favourite books growing up.

Fa’afetai tele lava Maila!
