Orchard Outreach descended on Standish last week, where Simon Jones @simonjonestrees did his magic, high up in tge tallest trees, whilst volunteers tackled smaller trees and lower branches, or lugged tge arisings across the orchard to form a dead-hedge on the orchard's boundary.

Setting a new high for orchard hospitality, Ed served us all fine, artisans coffee in his office / café, together with 2 DELICIOUS cakes, freshly baked by Sally, tge sort of welcome that is sure to encourage us to return. taken in Standish, Gloucestershire, United Kingdom by @simonjonestrees

The next iteration of Orchard Outreach is tomorrow, where we'll be helping to prune some mature fruit trees, both apple and pear, in a small but delightful orchard near Standish. It's set on a slight rise at the foot of the Cotswold escarpment, so offers a lovely views over the Vale of Berkeley towards the River Severn, and we'd be delighted for our members to join us. For details of location please email david.lindgren@glosorchards.org

(Please note, it's forecast to be another hot day tomorrow, so if you do decide to come along, please bring plenty of water, sun screen, hat, etc etc ... as well as the usual suitable orchard-appropriate clothing!!) taken in Standish, Gloucestershire, United Kingdom by @simonjonestrees

Johnny and I have enjoyed the opportunity to work some Sweet Chestnut Coppice this year. It’s incredible wood that is naturally resistant to decay. It can be split to make fence posts, which do not need to be treated with any nasty preservative chemicals, like other soft wood posts. Most of last Winter’s chestnut has been used for 6’ and 8’ fence posts. However, this series of pictures shows us making some smaller 4’ dropper posts. Firstly we cut some 4’ lengths of straight, clean chestnut then split it into 1/8’s using splitting wedges. The 1/8 pieces are then further split using a cleaving brake into 1.5” posts. Lastly they are cleaned up with a Froe and axe. Thank you to @chizharward for recommending us to the customer.

I’ve done some work over the past couple of weeks for @glosorchards Gloucestershire Orchard Trust restoring some big old cider apple trees. Many of them had become overwhelmed with Mistletoe and needed some significant pruning. Mistletoe is semi-parasitic and, like most things, be is fine in moderation but is unfortunately becoming an increasing issue for our fruit trees as our climate changes. Hopefully this before and after shot demonstrates the removal of a lot of mistletoe and the opening up of the trees crown to improve light and air flow. taken in Gloucestershire by @simonjonestrees

At Port Mole charcoal we grade our charcoal twice. 🤘 The second grading process produces charcoal with pieces around 25mm (1”) diameter.

This ‘Pizza Grade’ charcoal burns hot 🔥 and is great for smaller BBQs or Pizza ovens where you want to cook something fast at a high temperature.

It is also known as ‘Smithing charcoal’ as it is prized by Blacksmiths for forging metal. In the first photo Johnny is using our Pizza grade charcoal to forge a Froe blade 🙌
