A coddiwomple in the vague direction of the potteries with stops at Wedgwood and Middleport. Every intention of winding at Harecastle Tunnel but it seemed like a good time to feel the fear and do it anyway (second longest on the canal system I believe). Spotted 100 year old painted skeleton Sid, not that scary. Came to the bloody low and bloody narrow bit - slightly scary. Thankfully not as claustrophobic as tiny Italian hotel lifts. Not captured on video, gently falling leaves, the smell of woodsmoke and all the friendly waves. I love October 🍂🍁🍄🪵 by @simplenaturalhandmade

On the move again. Found the perfect spot to moor for the night. Lit our tiny bbq, cooked sausages, read books, photographed the sunset and all was going well until a bat flew over my head and I decided that it was time to retreat indoors and light a fire. Cue two snoring dogs. Whether I sleep as well as those two depends on the Beechams. No sick days allowed when you’ve got sights to see and locks to operate #narrowboatlife by @simplenaturalhandmade

Sailing has paused.Six days of @theverycoolcoffeebus for M while I do all the rainy day jobs he’d hate to be around for. The food cupboard of doom. This was one of my Dad’s pet peeves, having things in your cupboard a year or so out of date. He’d hold up an ancient jar of ground cinnamon and shake his head as though the worst crime had been committed 😂 Now that we have just one food cupboard every inch of it counts. The temptation to make crochet pumpkins instead has not been resisted in any shape or form. This little batch is destined for our annual coffee gig at a real pumpkin patch. Given that I should have started making them a month ago I think my out of date cinnamon is quite safe for the moment #narrowboatlife by @simplenaturalhandmade

Celebrating the little rain showers along the way, though they never last long. At some stage the low water levels might stop us in our tracks but for now, lovely places along the way. Alrewas, Fradley… so many beautiful historic boats in this neck of the woods. The perfect mooring tonight, countryside all around. The absolute highlight of my day though was a small grey, no idea what kind of dog, who ‘escaped’ her owners boat and decided to run up to our boat in the lock hop aboard to say hello to two very startled springers behind a gate in the bow. After introducing herself she then hopped out, ran alongside and used the stern as a stepping stone to the other side, finishing her bolt for freedom by crossing the tiny walk way across the lock gate (sheer drop into the water but didn’t phase her), then for good measure decided to see if she could get in the swan hatch before finally being scooped up and attached to a lead. What a star she was! Apparently not a good swimmer so it’s just as well she’s nimble! She needs her very own Instagram account. #narrowboatlife by @simplenaturalhandmade

Cruising through these beautiful scenes is surprisingly tiring! We move at 4mph but there’s clearly more ‘steps’ in a day than you’d think. There’s always something at the wrong end of the boat 😏 Today we moored up mid-journey, scrambled up the bank beside a bridge and did a top-up food shop. The dogs lucked out with a huge freshly mown field, ran around in circles with sticks like idiots and returned with green socks. #narrowboatlife by @simplenaturalhandmade

Quiet cruising days. Waving hello. Concentrating in deep locks. Finally getting that hearty cooked breakfast (albeit in the middle of the afternoon). A gentle spire of smoke from our fire. Rosy cheeks. Counting the hours to comfy pillows 🥱 😴 #narrowboatlife by @simplenaturalhandmade

Along the Trent and Mersey. Quite a few locks ticked off today, some solo, some shared. M is doing the windlass stuff and I’m perfecting the art of driving in through one gate to save him legwork. We lit our first fire of the season (the stove blackener stuff burned off with a bit of a stink and smoke 🤭). Hot shower, a well earned nap, a few chapters of Arthur & George. Saw conkers floating by and it suddenly feels like autumn has arrived. #narrowboatlife by @simplenaturalhandmade

Not gonna lie, a cooked breakfast was high on our wish list today and didn’t materialise. A scone, a cup of tea and a wander round the garden broke the travelling up a bit and we bought homemade raspberry jam, I call that a win. Really impressed this lock keeper’s cottage was restored from derelict 👍 #narrowboatlife by @simplenaturalhandmade

…from Newark to Nottingham with a pub stop, fetch on the banks of the Trent with doggy life jackets (not taking any chances), charming old single locks and big old deep ones. Beautiful countryside and the bustle of city life. Gongoozlers and unofficial helpers. Sleepy dogs and even sleepier boaters.#narrowboatlife by @simplenaturalhandmade

‘Always be on the lookout for the presence of wonder.’ (E.B. White). In this case, these little feathered wonders. Bright, colourful, blink and you miss them. Not wildlife shot of the year but the first time I’ve managed to capture more than a blur. Moving boat, moving bird, not the best combo but I will keep trying. Less time to gaze out of the swan hatch lately, with or without my camera. Just when life seems heavy a mother duck and three ducklings came swimming by, not greedy, just hopeful. A reminder to keep your head up above water whilst madly swimming underneath #narrowboatlife by @simplenaturalhandmade

A cruise with blanket weed drama, pontoons with other kinds of weed drama. An abundance of wildlife. Towing a boat home after his weed drama. Getting stuck in a lock for an hour (control box electrics). Cups of tea soothing tricky moments. Dog walking, weld gathering, gel printing, boat painting. Slightly tired 🤭 #narrowboatlife by @simplenaturalhandmade
