On today’s episode of answering “how’s your PhD going?….I’ve wanted to to do a PhD sometime”….

Are you ready to find a CAT in a DARK room? Huh?

Body: sleep.
Brain: let’s review life since 2014.
Anyone else? Tell me I’m not alone.

I have this silent aura of shyness tho. I’m not the loud one in the room. I think a lot before I speak… sometimes I overthink.I opened this Simpl-Ify page over a year ago and never posted. I had so many ideas, felt a bit ambitious 🤦🏽‍♀️. Every time I tried, fear won cos I’m never the type to put myself out there. I like hiding in the background type shii.

And if I’m being honest… I’m also scared of consistency. Because posting once is one thing. Showing up again and again? That’s commitment. But I don’t want to keep hiding ideas that could help someone. I want to live this life knowing that someone became better cos of me. And social media is so powerful; I don’t think anyone should sleep on it.

So here we are.

Simpl-Ify is just me sharing thoughts, lessons, conversations and things I’ve learned, in a way that makes sense and maybe makes life feel a little clearer.

If it resonates, stay with me.
Encourage me. Grow with me.

Let’s see where this goes

Nobody sees the hours a PhD takes, only the questions people ask about it. So this month, I’m asking for a little kindness for every PhD student who looks tired after “just sitting at a computer all day.” Happy new month.

Every one of these has found me at some point in grad school, and a few of them still visit. The 11:52 PM email gets my heart going every single time. My supervisor is a pro on that 🤦🏽‍♀️

What I’ve learned is that most of them look much worse at night than they do in the morning. The late email is usually just a meeting, the paper that looks like yours rarely asks the question the way you would, and the 2 AM thesis plan is almost always a no by breakfast. The survival kit on slide 8 is what actually helps me.

Which number got you this year? Mine is 06, every single time.

Five months of “Under Review” just to receive a professionally worded breakup letter. 😭😂

Academic publishing is the only dating scene where you get rejected and immediately start looking for another journal with the same red flags.

Researchers, what’s the longest you’ve waited for a journal decision? 👀

Five-year plan? 😂 Girl, I’m still negotiating with Chapter 3. One deadline at a time, please! 😭📚☕️

Some reflection for you, my friend!

A PhD tests your patience, your discipline, your insecurities, your resilience, your relationship with failure, and even your understanding of success.

Perhaps the greatest challenge is learning how to grow through the process without losing yourself in it. The real achievement isn’t just becoming a Doctor. It’s becoming one without forgetting the person you were before the title.

Which part of you has your PhD tested the most so far?

The P.E.O. International Peace Scholarship gives up to $12,500 to women from outside Canada and the US who are doing a master’s or PhD here, and you can apply even if you haven’t arrived yet. The step most people miss is the eligibility form. It closes on December 15, and you won’t get the full application until it’s approved, so start this week.

Before you apply, know that it asks you to commit to going home after your degree. Make sure that fits your plans.

Official page: peointernational.org/educational-support/international-peace-scholarship-fund/eligibility-and-application-process/

Who’s the woman you’re sending this to? Tag her below.

Some days I give the writing advice. Other days I’m the one who needs it.

Being a PhD candidate and a writing tutor means I know how hard a blank page feels from both sides of the desk. That’s why I made the free Writing Studio at simpl-ify.com. Link in bio.

If you’ve ever stared at a blank page for an hour, this one is for you.

The Writing Studio is free, and it covers five kinds of writing: academic, research, professional, applications, and personal writing. Every lesson gives you a small task for the next ten minutes, plus a checklist for your draft, templates, and notes for your field.

Find it at simpl-ify.com/learn, or through the link in my bio.

This week, SHOW UP FOR YOURSELF! Not because you have everything figured out. Not because you feel motivated every day. But because your dreams deserve more than your good intentions.
