As estate transition specialists, we need to tell you a hard truth. There’s really no “ethical” way to get rid of your stuff.

Only about 20-30% of donations to places like Goodwill are good enough to hit the retail floor. The rest go to auction or outlets where it’s sold by the pound. Some are recycled. The rest? Landfills.

What’s worse, this “donation dumping” is costing donation centers millions of dollars each year.

The only way to break the cycle is to CONSUME LESS and make intentional decisions about what we buy.

Every generation deals with clutter. But the root cause is overbuying.

When you purge a home, you discover how people truly lived their lives.

Stop putting a lid on your own life to appease someone else’s idea of who you should be.

If you find yourself hiding anything, ask yourself: “Who’s going to find it?” and “How should I deal with it now?

Parents spend decades breaking up fights between their kids. But the biggest fight is in the making if you don’t make a plan for your stuff.

As estate transition specialists, we see it all the time. The deepest, most permanent family rifts usually boil down to two things:

1– Bitter arguments over the few items everyone wants.

2– The quiet resentment of the one adult child left to clean up all the junk nobody wants.

In our experience, it always falls on one person’s shoulders.

Leaving a legacy is about more than creating a will or a trust. It’s about having the hard conversations now. Declutter your spaces, talk about what actually holds sentimental value, and clearly designate who gets what.

Don’t let a crisis start the conversation.

There’s really no better feeling than knowing your family is not going to fight over your stuff.

They won’t drown in your generational clutter.

They know what mattered most to you and will cherish it because of the conversations you had and the stories you told.

At the end of the day, it’s just stuff. But that stuff carries a lot of weight if you never deal with it.

Estate cleanouts are hard for even the most tight-knit families. But if you’re dealing with estrangement or difficult family dynamics, it’s absolutely brutal.

If you feel stuck, you’re NOT lazy or broken.

The problem is no one has given you the space to process not only the stuff, but the feelings around the stuff.

We look at it as bringing our family to your family. Sometimes it’s not possible to get everyone to talk on the sofa, but we can still provide a bridge.

We can hold space for you to talk about the feelings you can’t talk about with your family.

Generational clutter hits different. A set of clear containers and a label maker aren’t going to fix this one.

Sometimes the best strategy is to let someone cry and feel the feelings they normally bottle up in front of their family because of guilt or shame.

We all underestimate the emotional weight of clutter. You not only have to process the stuff, but the feelings behind the stuff.

You’re not alone. It’s not YOU. It’s just really f-ing complicated.

It is incredibly hard to look at a lifetime of your parents’ collections and realize… you don’t really want them.

For the older generation, love and memory were often tied to physical objects: the porcelain figurines, the matching glass sets, the carefully curated tchotchkes on the mantle.

To them, those items represented security, success, and home.

But it is not a betrayal of their memory to decide you want a lighter life.

Mom or Dad might get defensive when you bring it up. You’ll probably fight over what goes and what stays.

But if no one deals with it, it WILL be your problem someday. And it only gets heavier and harder the longer you wait.

You don’t have to do it alone. Link in bio for how we can help.

The kids don’t want the china…
unless you actually use it with them now.

The simple truth is that your kids have zero emotional attachment to dishes that sat in a dark hutch for forty years.

If you want the next generation to cherish Grandma’s fine china, pull it out on a random Tuesday. Eat takeout off of it. Intentionally build a memory around it.

The key is leading by example. If it’s tied to a memory of you laughing around a table, it becomes a treasure. Otherwise? It’s okay to let it find a new home.

Inherited china roll call 🍽️👇 Who did yours come from, what pattern is it, and does it actually make it to the dinner table?
