it's been a year since my last drink.

I come from a long line of alcoholics,
so for many years, I justified it.
I proclaimed my truth of being an alcoholic twelve years ago when I quit taking pills.
the seeds kept being planted;
every time I spoke with someone who found the strength to give up booze.
I liked to remind myself who was in control,
so I'd be intentional about not drinking
for a week, do an occasional dry month,
at the beginning of last year, I even took 137 days off.
at the time, I kept having this conversation
that I am a bartender, and an alcoholic,
I would undoubtedly drink again.
so I spent last summer drinking.
mostly just one drink,
but a few times, it was one too many.
whether it was one or six,
I'd wake up with the dreaded hangxiety.
I'd remember how nice it had been to be intentional -
to not numb my experiences
but nourish myself, do my bedtime routine, sleep well,
and most importantly, not intake poison
that added unnecessary anxiety
to my already chemically imbalanced brain.
it was barely sunrise when I exited my gate on a layover en route to GD60
and straight ahead, I saw Henry's Tavern.
unbeknownst to me at the time,
it was one last beer for my pops -
channeling his advice of "never quit quitting!"
it hasn't all been easy.
I've had to release who I was with alcohol -
the drunk girl persona,
and spaces & connections that went with it.
my social anxiety has been forced to be felt;
doing things scared has taken on a whole new meaning without the crutch of booze.
it has certainly been worth every bit of discomfort, though.
I've never been more in tune, vulnerable, open or present.
unfortunately, giving up alcohol hasn't fixed my whole life,
but I have found that it is much easier to realign without.
rather than drowning out the noise,
I continue to lean deeper into finding my way on this spinning rock.
someone recently said, "she's Kelly sober" -
and I couldn't think of a better way to frame it.
my journey may not look like yours, and that's okay,
I promise I won't lose any sleep over it.
I just hope that you find your way, too.🫶

thirty-six,
on a total lunar eclipse.
allowing so much release
as the learning and unlearning
never truly end.
blessed to welcome
more wrinkles and grays.
as the fear subsides
and the truth arises -
I am filled with gratitude
for all versions past,
that endured
the collection of experiences
that led to the present.
a precious gift, this life.
finding myself more open,
with each rotation.
vulnerability continues to flow
and allow so much room for joy,
in befriending my shadows
and meeting yours, too.
choosing to be intentional
changes everything.
I hope I am never too busy
to notice the beauty of it all,
in the midst of the chaos.
don't forget to stop and smell the flowers.

I had the honor & privilege of baking cupcakes for @sambushband who not only celebrated his 74th birthday, but his first Hawai'i shows, officially marking off every state! 🥺🎂

📍@anainahou knocks it out of the park, every time! an incredible nonprofit with the best crew. check 'em out next time you're in the north central pacific.🏝

the calendar claims the end has arrived.
I could quantify the year to tell you about
the hours spent behind the wheel,
the number of houseguests welcomed,
concerts attended,
sunsets watched,
lives lost,
baked goods shared,
books read,
flights caught,
and days without booze...
but I'd rather tell you that I chose to keep showing up. scared, and often alone,
and I was rewarded time and time again.
I found myself again this year
and found myself welcomed and seen
in spaces filled with strangers,
in connections with beautiful souls.
in a world desperate to keep us separated,
you might be surprised how alike we are!
show up scared. talk to strangers. lend a hand.

I have found the softest version of me, without you.
I will be grateful for eternity, for an imperfect guide.
somehow, it has been three years of shouting to the world that I am Henry's daughter -
that I am me, because of him; his work ethic, his willingness to help, his character that never had to be questioned, his laugh that reverberated.
sometimes, I even tell them about how the years of doing my best to care for him landed me the role of honoring his final wishes,
and how it changed me forever. by @simply__kell
